EDITOR’S NOTE: Readers are reporting that this facial cleanser has been discontinued in their local stores. However, if you can’t find this cleanser, Aldi introduced two new facial cleansers in 2020, including one that is similar to this old formula. While Aldi has a small personal care and toiletry section, the store does offer one option for facial cleansers: the Lacura Hydrating Facial Cleanser with Provitamin B5. I started buying the 8.45-ounce bottles of Aldi’s face wash several years ago upon the recommendation of a friend who claimed the product was inexpensive and effective.
The Lacura Hydrating Facial Cleanser contains vitamin E and aloe vera, is pH balanced, and is designed for all skin types. It claims to remove dirt and makeup without irritating or drying out the skin. It also advertises that it “nurtures the skin even during the cleansing process” and uses “caring oils and aloe vera … to keep the skin naturally balanced.” It is non-comedogenic, meaning it is formulated to not cause blocked pores.
The Lacura brand, created in Germany, apparently is quite popular in Europe, so a few years ago Aldi decided to introduce the brand in the United States as well.
Joan Kavanaugh, ALDI’s vice president of corporate purchasing, states about the Lacura line, “Every product features nature’s finest ingredients and the latest skincare research to really nurture the skin. In fact, we use the same hard-working ingredients you’ll find behind more expensive labels. With Lacura, enjoying firmer, fresher, feel-good skin doesn’t have to cost a fortune.”
I’ve been using the Lacura Hydrating Facial Cleanser for several years now. The cleanser is a smooth, white, milky liquid with a mild scent. Its consistency is fairly thin. It runs through my fingers a bit when I pour a small amount into my hand. Instructions direct consumers to use the face wash in mornings and evenings, using small circular motions to gently rub it into skin and then remove the cleanser with clean water or a moist cotton pad.
This cleanser does not contain any exfoliating ingredients, so if you’re looking for an abrasive face wash that removes dead skin cells or polishes the skin, this is not the cleanser for you.
The Lacura Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a basic but adequate face wash. It’s good for washing your face in the morning or at the end of the day, or if you don’t want to use regular bar soap or body wash on your face in the shower, this is a good alternative.
This face wash is made in Germany and is dermatologically tested but is not tested on animals.
The Verdict:
Recommended. This facial cleanser doesn’t do anything special, but if you’re looking for a mild cleanser, this will do the job.
Hello – I only just found your site this morning, although I have been shopping at Aldi’s for many of years…this is really nice. I discovered Lacura a long time ago.. before that I was almost exclusively an Oil of Olay user, but I switched and never looked back 🙂 ..I have also purchased the Lacura facial cleanser in the past but I don’t think the one I bought was labeled this hydrating, aloe, vitamin b5 variety.. is their more than one type of Lacura facewash? I will take a closer look at this item the next time I am at my local Aldi.. and a closer look at their little personal care area because I have never noticed Lacura lip gloss! 🙂
Welcome! This is the only facial cleanser variety Aldi sells. They redesigned the bottle a few years ago, and they may have tweaked the formula as well, which might be why you recall buying something a little different. The lip balm is an ALDI Find, so it only shows up once or twice a year for a short time. It’s good, though!
I like the product, Lacura Hydrating Facial Cleanser, however, I find the pump dispenser very difficult to use. It is difficult to discover the secret to getting the pump to work. Eventually I got one to work, but in subsequent pruchases, I had the same problem. I decided to save the one pump device that works and switch it with the pumps in newer bottles. I wish someone would look into this and either replace this pump device with one that is more customer friendly, or go back to the former bottle that just has a flip top cap on the top of the jar.
I love this facial cleanser but I can no longer find it in our local Aldi Stores in Rochester NY. Did they stop carrying it? I would be very disappointed if they did.
I also love the cleaner and I can’t find in Michigan either. I hope it isn’t discontinued
I’m in Indiana & have not been able to get it either. I asked a few weeks ago if it will be restocked & the employee checked for me and said that it had been discontinued. I’m now on the hunt for another comparable product after using this for years.
I love it too, but it appears that Aldi has discontinued it. Really too bad!! Not everyone wants to use a drying cleanser!
Yes they did discontinue it and I am extremely disappointed. We all need to contact Aldi directly. Our comments here are not seen by the Aldi Corporation. Not that it is going to do any good but hey you never know. If they get enough complaints maybe they will bring the old formula back.

I don’t like the new gel at all! If you get it in your eyes, it stings like soap and leaves your skin dry, when you can finally get the ‘gel formula’ off your skin. So glad to see others missing the cream facial cleanser…why change a good protein? I won’t buy the gel again, and may use this bottle to was my hands…but it is dry, so I’m not even sure about that!
Julie I agree with you 100% Thy certainly made a mistake in changing the formula in my opinion. I will not buy the new cleanser.
Same here, tried it once, never again! How can they discontinued an item that works so well…I have looked high and low and can’t find it anywhere.

Totally agree! It states on the bottle that it takes makeup off, well that should mean you can wash your eyes with it then! The great hydrating one was never a problem with cleansing your whole face, including your eyes! So imagine my shock when I used the new gel one for the first time today and my eyes were stinging! I only bought this gel version because my Aldi has not had the hydrating one all this past year. But I still had my hydrating one until the last drop was used yesterday. I just wrote to Aldi about this. I love my Lacura skin regimen but not this gel cleanser!

I previously posted positively about this cleanser, but now have to agree with Gisa.. the tweaked version of the hydrating cleanser does not provide a cleansing experience. Mine does not foam, nor lather and in fact feels like I am washing my face with lotion, which would be okay if it was truly hydrating. It reminds me of Cetaphil which is rather blah as well. I may try the foaming gel cleanser if I see it at my Aldi’s but I would not purchase another bottle of the white hydrating cleanser.
Just a follow-up, and I do realize this is the comment section for the hydrating cleanser. In a previous post I mentioned that I would try the new gel cleanser if I saw it in my store. Well I did, and I love it. I bought the pump bottle of gel cleanser, not the tube of exfoliating gel. It has a nice fresh scent – maybe citrus? – foams easily and leaves my face gently cleaned. I do not find it drying but I still moisturize afterward, and here is where I noticed the real difference. My moisturizer went on so smoothly! When I was using the “tweaked” formula of the (white bottle) hydrating cleanser it was hard to spread my moisturizer on afterward, like my face was gummy. After using the gel cleanser, my moisturizer just glides on. I will leave a positive review on the actual gel product page as well. Thank you for this one Aldi! 🙂

I too am upset that lacura discontinued the hydrating facial cleanser.
I am extremely upset. Can’t find anything like it. I have tried and tossed several different facial cleansers.
By the way, the original can still be purchased in the Germany stores.
It’s much cheaper, also but pretty expensive to fly over for it! I load up when we visit each year or so.
