Crofton Hydration Bottle

EDITOR’S NOTE: More than one year later, this bottle continues to perform just as well as it did the day we got it. It still keeps liquids cool/hot, and it does not sweat. The paint color also has not chipped off the outside of the bottle; we can’t say the same for a similar bottle we purchased around the same time from Walmart.

Double-walled bottles are all the rage right now, and for good reason: they’re incredibly practical. For one thing, they keep drinks hotter or cooler for longer than a typical sport bottle, which is especially important if you’re taking one out into more extreme temperatures or if you’re going to need the drink to stay hot or cold for a long time.

Two, they sweat a lot less. We do our fair share of hiking around here, and there are few things more irritating than a water bottle that sweats through our hiking backpack. Double-walled bottles don’t sweat, so not only does your drink stay at the desired temperature, but the outside of the bottle stays dry, too.

Stainless-steel bottles have the additional benefit of being more resistant to breaking. As someone whose double-walled plastic bottle cracked while hiking, I appreciate this.

Aldi has a couple of models of stainless-steel double-walled bottles that it rotates out during the year, including an interesting (if sort of bulky) Adventuridge model. This one, meanwhile, comes from Crofton:

Crofton Hydration Bottle

The Crofton Hydration Bottle is a double-walled stainless steel bottle that comes in a few assorted colors. It retails for $3.99, which is the cheapest double-walled bottle we’ve personally seen anywhere. The bottle carries 16 ounces of liquid and includes a threaded lid.

We already have a tumbler of our own, a 20 ounce Silver Buffalo Stainless Steel Vacuum Sealed Tumbler that we have used successfully for outdoor hiking, so we did a bit of side-by-side comparison.

The most obvious difference is in the mouth of the Crofton, which, like many others of its style, is more narrow at the top. Our refrigerator’s ice cubes fit through without problem, but we had to feed them one at a time.

To test out the Crofton, we filled both it and the Silver Buffalo up with ice, then topped them off with water, and then let them sit overnight. About 9 hours later, this is what we found:

Both were cold, had plenty of ice left in them, and neither was sweating. This was indoors at room temperature (about 75 degrees Fahrenheit / 24 degrees Celsius), so it wasn’t extreme. Still, the Crofton got the job done in our test, and that leads us to think it would do respectably in hotter (or colder) temperatures, too.

The Verdict:

The Crofton Hydration Bottle, with its double-walled stainless steel design, is a solid choice for those times when you need a bottle that keeps the drink close to temperature and doesn’t sweat. And at $3.99, it’s as cheap an option for this kind of bottle as we’ve ever seen.

  1. Four bucks for a vacuum flask bottle is incredibly cheap. If only my kids would stop buying the $30 swell bottles…

  2. What exactly is a dual function lid?

  3. I love my water bottle. It keeps ice for 2 days. I lost the top and need a replacement but cannot find one. I wishI knew where to purchase the top.

  4. Looking for a small water bottle….have an Aldi one from a few years ago but it fell so I need a replacement. 12 oz or no more than 17
