Specially Selected Patagonian Scallops

Last Updated on February 9, 2019

Aldi’s Special Buy (ALDI Find) Specially Selected Patagonian Scallops in Garlic Cream Sauce are a real treat. Perhaps their only pitfall is that you don’t get many scallops in one box, but what you do get is good.

Specially Selected Patagonian Scallops

Patagonian scallops are small, similar to more commonly seen bay scallops. These ones from Aldi come in a tasty garlic cream sauce that also includes butter, olive oil, onions, and black pepper.

The Specially Selected Patagonian Scallops come frozen in an 8-ounce box. The box claims it contains one serving, but if you serve the scallops with pasta you can get two decent-but-not-large servings. The scallops are advertised as wild caught using a bottom otter trawl net and are certified sustainable through the Marine Stewardship Council.

They contain 230 calories per serving, with 6 grams saturated fat (30% DV), 780 mg sodium (34% DV), and 3 grams total sugars (with 0 grams added sugars).

The Patagonian Scallops can be prepared on the stove top or in the microwave. I opted to cook mine on the stove top. I also cooked some angel hair pasta and topped it with the scallops, similar to the photo on the box. When I first took the frozen scallops out of their packaging, it didn’t look like there was much sauce, but as they thawed and cooked, there was plenty of sauce. The scallops were delicious with pasta, and I topped it all with a little grated Parmesan cheese, which made it even better.

To cook the scallops on the stove top, preheat a saucepan on medium heat. Remove frozen scallops from all packaging and add to the pan. Cook on medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, for 6-8 minutes or until scallops are cooked.

To cook in the microwave, remove frozen scallops from all packaging and place contents into a microwave-safe dish. Loosely cover and cook for 2 minutes. Stir and cook for another 2 minutes. Let rest 1 minute in the covered dish before serving. The microwave directions mention that the scallops were tested in a 1000 Watt microwave oven, and as cooking times may vary depending on ovens, these are guidelines only. For complete safety, cook until scallops are opaque and lightly browned.

The Verdict:

Aldi’s Specially Selected Patagonian Scallops in Garlic Cream Sauce are delicious, but be aware that serving sizes are small. These Special Buy (ALDI Find) scallops make a good occasional treat.

  1. I add some sherry to these. Gives them a lift. Also a few read pepper flakes
