The Aldi Steak Roundup

Last Updated on May 20, 2019

SteakI’m a fan of red meat (in moderation) and I’ve tried many of the Aldi red meat offerings over the years. We’ve spent a fair amount of time on Aldi Reviewer looking at some of them, including the store’s burger selection. We’ve also done a tour of duty going over the cuts of steak Aldi offers, and I’d like to take some time here to recount our findings.

Cattlemen’s Ranch Bacon Wrapped Chuck Filet

Bacon Wrapped Filet

“At around two dollars per filet, the Cattlemen’s Ranch Bacon Wrapped Chuck Tender Filet is about what you pay for. Even with proper pampering, this is still a cheap-quality meat that is on the lower end of taste and texture. We wouldn’t recommend trying to build a party menu around it, but if you’re a carnivore wanting a budget grilling experience, you can’t beat the price. If, on the other hand, you want a more gourmet entree, consider some of Aldi’s more premium steak offerings.”

USDA Choice Strip Steak

Strip Steak

“The USDA Choice Strip Steak is a solid, if unspectacular, entry in the lineup of Aldi steaks. Falling in the midpoint between the dubious chuck filet and excellent ribeye, the strip steak is worth considering if you need a moderately tender cut without the ribeye’s flare-ups. It’s also a good choice for recipes, like fajitas, that call for cuts like this one. Recommended.”

USDA Choice Top Sirloin Steak

USDA Top Sirloin Steak

“If you want a value steak, the top sirloin is a viable option. It’s not top-of-the-line — it’s a little less tender than Aldi’s ribeye — but delivers good value for $6 a pound. And, just as importantly, it’s priced well compared to top sirloins at other grocers. Recommended.”

USDA Choice Ribeye Steak

USDA Choice Ribeye Steak

“If you want a premium steakhouse steak, look no further. This product of the USA delivers the goods, with a great flavor and wonderful texture. The price is more than other Aldi steaks — and this steak is more prone to grill flare-ups than many other cuts — but the payoff is well worth it. Definitely recommended.”

The Verdict:

All of the steaks have their pros and cons. We like the ribeye best for pure steak grilling purposes, although it can flare up with some grills. We think the strip steak is a good option for fajitas as well as grilling if flare-ups are a concern. The top sirloin is okay, if inferior to the ribeye and strip steak. And we think the bacon-wrapped filet, while cheap, is a pretty mediocre slab of meat.

  1. I’ve tried almost all the steaks Aldi has to offer and I have to say that the Skirt steak is my favorite. Although the way Aldi cuts it, it almost resembles a Flank steak instead. Regardless, I cook it over high heat for minute or two each side. Nice and chard on the outside and medium rare inside. Perfect!

  2. Have you ever tried the beef loin. I see it’s on sale and was wondering about it for a holiday meal but to serve others want to know of the taste or value I’ve never used any beef from Aldi only chicken or pork…

  3. From charbroil:
Flare-ups usually happen because of excess fat, sauces or oily marinades. So trim as much excess fat as you can, without sacrificing flavor.

  4. No mention of meat without growth hormones. I want grass fed/ no growth hormones.
