Recall Roundup: Peaches, Nectarines, and Plums

Aldi recalled Rio Duero peaches, nectarines, and plums from select stores on January 25, 2019, because of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. The fruit also was sold in Walmart, Costco, Fairway, Market Basket, and Hannaford stores.

The produce is from Chile and was sold in 2-lb. bags in Aldi stores in the following states:

  • Alabama
  • Georgia
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia

Aldi product UPC codes are as follows:

  • Rio Duero Fresh Peaches: 7804650090281, 859794007029, 7808755601304, or 7800125009642
  • Rio Duero Fresh Nectarines: 859794007012, 7804650090304, 7808755601281, or 7800125009635
  • Rio Duero Fresh Plums: 859794007036, 7804650090298, 7808755601298, or 7800125009659

The recall is in cooperation with Jac. Vandenberg Inc. of Yonkers, New York. Aldi immediately removed the affected produce from its stores. The recall also affects produce customers may have purchased through Aldi’s partnership with Instacart, a grocery delivery service.

At the time of publication, Aldi stated no illnesses had been reported in relation to the recall, and no other Aldi products are affected by the recall.

According to an FDA press release, the recall resulted after a routine sampling program by the packing house showed that the products contained bacteria. The company is no longer distributing the products and is working with the FDA to determine the cause of contamination.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause healthy people to suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. It can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, or in people with compromised immune systems. It also can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

If customers have any of the recalled produce, they should dispose of it or return it to an Aldi store for a full refund. Anyone with questions can contact Jac. Vandenberg Inc. at compliance@jacvandenberg.com.
