Trader Joe’s: Trader José’s Chunky Salsa

Last Updated on July 9, 2023

Trader Joe’s has several salsa options, including several jars under the Mexicanized name Trader José’s. There is Trader José’s Salsa Verde and Trader José’s Salsa Autentica (which claims to be on the spicy side) … and then there is this product, Trader José’s Chunky Salsa, which registers on the mild end in terms of spiciness. My family likes mild salsa, so today I’m looking at Trader José’s Chunky Salsa.

Trader Jose's Chunky Salsa

The Chunky Salsa is sold in a 16-oz. jar for $1.99 at the time of writing. It’s advertised as all natural with no artificial colors, no artificial flavors, and no preservatives.

A two-tablespoon serving (but who really eats only two tablespoons?) will give you 10 calories, 0 grams of fat, 0 mg of cholesterol, 170 mg of sodium (7% of your daily allowance), 0 grams of protein, 3 grams of total carbs, and 2 grams of sugar. One serving also contains 2% each of your daily value of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, calcium, and iron.

Ingredients are: tomatoes, tomato puree (water, tomato paste), green bell peppers, onions, jalapeno peppers, distilled vinegar, salt, garlic, coriander, paprika, and oregano.

The salsa is made in a facility that processes milk, so be aware if you or anyone you’re serving this to has a dairy allergy.

My family really liked this salsa. It has a good consistency — chunky but with no huge pieces of tomato — and it has good flavor. It is flavorful and has some kick, but it’s not spicy. It actually reminded us some of Aldi’s Casa Mamita Restaurant Style Salsa, which is a limited-time ALDI Find (Special Buy) that is not in Aldi stores all the time. My husband also thought the Trader José’s Chunky Salsa was a bit like name-brand On the Border salsa.

The Verdict:

Trader Joe’s Trader José’s Chunky Salsa is a good mild salsa with lots of flavor. It goes well with tortilla chips or in your favorite Mexican dish.
