Trader Joe’s: Shortcake Biscuits

When my local strawberry-picking season was wrapping up, I noticed a fun product at Trader Joe’s that would go well with fresh berries: Trader Joe’s Shortcake Biscuits.

Trader Joe's Shortcake Biscuits

These were sold in a 10-oz. package containing four biscuits for $2.99 at the time of publication. The package stated the biscuits are “wonderful with fresh fruit and whipped cream.”

One 2.5-oz. biscuit nets you 270 calories, with 120 calories from fat. One biscuit also has 14 grams of total fat (22% of your daily value), 8 grams of saturated fat (40% DV), 50 mg of cholesterol (17% DV), 230 mg sodium (10% DV), 32 total carbohydrates (11% DV), and 9 grams of sugars.

The ingredients include goodies (that are not health foods) such as cane sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract.

The biscuits contain no artificial colors or flavors and no preservatives. Because they have no preservatives, you’ll want to eat the biscuits within a few days of purchasing them. My biscuits had a sell-by sticker with a date that was three days after the day I purchased them.

In addition, people with allergies should be aware they contain wheat, milk, and eggs, and they may contain traces of peanuts, tree nuts, and soy.

My family ate the Trader Joe’s Shortcake Biscuits the evening I purchased them, and we topped them with strawberries and whipped cream. The biscuits are on the harder side with a dense, thick texture. They are not like the soft traditional shortcake usually served with berries and whipped cream. They are like a cross between hard shortbread and regular shortcake. The biscuits are sweet, but not overly sweet, with nice notes of vanilla and cream. Overall, my family thought the shortcake biscuits were all right, but they don’t rank as one of our favorite desserts.

The Verdict:

Trader Joe’s Shortcake Biscuits are a unique accompaniment to fresh strawberries and whipped cream. They are harder and denser than the traditional shortcake that usually goes with berries and whipped cream, but they’re not quite as hard as shortcake’s cousin, shortbread. My family found the biscuits to be okay but probably not something we’ll buy again.
