Adventuridge Ladies Puffer Jacket

During a family outing to a pumpkin patch this fall, I joked with my husband that quilted puffer jackets seem to be the unspoken uniform for women of all ages, and especially for suburban moms. Everywhere we looked, women were wearing the puffer-style jackets while they corralled their children in hay mazes and on wagon rides.

Aldi is always one to keep its finger of the pulse of trends, and I got a chance to join — if a bit belatedly — the ranks of other stylish women when the discount grocer recently sold ladies’ and men’s puffer jackets.

The Adventuridge puffer jacket cost $24.99 at the time of publication. It comes in women’s sizes medium through extra large, and men’s sizes are large and extra large. The women’s jacket comes in gray (which is conveniently the color I prefer), while the men’s jacket is black. I didn’t get a close look at the men’s jackets to see if the cut is exactly the same (because the jackets are packaged up in ribbon-and-cardboard bundles), but if you’re a woman who wants a black jacket instead of gray, you could try a men’s jacket, although the men’s jackets are only available in larger sizes.

Features for the men’s and women’s jackets include:

• Ladies’ shell: 70% Nylon, 30% Polyester lining; filling: 100% Polyester
• Men’s shell: 100% Polyester lining; filling: 100% Polyester

The package says the jacket features Bionic Finish Eco, which gives it its water-repellent qualities. It can be machine washed in cold water with like colors, bleached if needed, and tumbled dry on low heat. It should not be ironed or dry cleaned. It’s made in Myanmar.

When I spotted these jackets in the store, I shamelessly unpackaged one and tried it on right there to make sure it fit, and then I folded it back up into its cardboard and Velcro-ribboned bundle. I realize it’s easier for Aldi to ship and sell clothing when it’s neatly packaged and bundled up, but we customers really appreciate being able to try on apparel, or at least being able to unfold a piece of clothing and hold it up to get an idea of fit. It saves me (and store employees) the hassle of later having to return clothing that doesn’t fit. In the case of this jacket, it was pretty easy to free it from its minimal packaging so I could get a better look.

I ended up buying a ladies’ jacket in the medium size, which the packaging says fits sizes 8-10. (A ladies’ large fits sizes 12-14, while a ladies’ extra large fits sizes 16-18.) I typically wear between a 6 and an 8, and the Aldi jacket is plenty roomy, although it’s a bit snug at the hips, so if you’re a size 10, it might be a bit tight and you might want to size up to a large. The benefit of it being snug around the hips is that it helps to block cold drafts.

I also noticed during the first time I wore the jacket outside that the sleeves are slightly on the shorter side for me when I move my arms. I am slightly taller than the average woman at 5′ 6″, so I occasionally have issues with sleeves being shorter than I prefer. The sleeves on the Aldi jacket are fine if I’m just walking, but they creep up my wrists some when I hold the steering wheel while driving. The Aldi jacket sleeves also rode up my wrists when I refilled the bird feeders in my back yard, which involves bending and reaching. The sleeves are not a deal breaker, but they are a minor annoyance especially as the weather grows colder, although they may not be an issue at all for people who are shorter or more petite.

An inner pocket on each side is large enough to hold a phone.

Overall, the jacket looks cute and has a hood for chilly or rainy weather. It also has generously sized inner and outer pockets, and the outer pockets zip shut. All of the pockets are big enough to fit my cell phone, which is on the larger side.

I initially wasn’t sure how warm this jacket would be in colder temperatures. Where I live in the Midwest, the average winter temperature ranges between about 25-40 degrees, with occasional dips into the lower twenties or teens. While this coat is most comfortable down to about 30 degrees, I’ve also worn it while walking kids to school in the 20s. Paired with a good pair of gloves, I also wore it and didn’t freeze while pumping gasoline when the temperature was in the teens. So it’s surprisingly warm, and as I wore it over the winter season it became my favorite jacket.

The Verdict:

The Adventuridge Ladies Puffer Jacket is stylish, surprisingly warm in cold temperatures, and comes with adequate pockets and a hood for keeping out the cold and rain. I wish the sleeves offered a little more coverage because they ride up my wrists if I do any kind of activity that involves reaching or bending, but I’m slightly tall and that might not be an issue if you are more petite. The jacket also is more snug around the hips, so if you’re on the upper end of a size range, you might want to size up.
