Adventuridge Watertight Storage Case (Storage Box)

I love float trips. It’s nice to be away from the busyness of life, floating down a river, watching and waiting for what’s around the next bend. Canoes are okay, but my favorite watercraft is a single-person kayak, where I can maneuver around tight corners and even paddle upriver a bit if I feel like it.

Packing for a float trip, though, involves some thought. What do you bring? What do you leave behind? Where and how do you pack what you need? Of special concern is keeping certain things dry: your phone, your car’s key fob, possibly a wallet. The nightmare scenario is having your keys drop into the murky river, never to be found, or your phone tipping into the water, ruined forever.

The solution is a watertight case, one you can put your things in, knowing that the case will keep them dry. In recent years, Aldi has sold such a case alongside its big summer lineup of camping and outdoor products.

The Adventuridge Watertight Storage Case (Product code: 11279) is an Aldi Find, which means it’s only in stores for a limited time. At the time of this post, the case was priced at $4.99, which is considerably less than other cases I’ve seen online. Aldi also sells an Adventuridge Watertight Smartphone Case for the same price. The smartphone case is 1.25 inches tall x 4.4 inches wide x 7.25 long, while this storage case is 2.63 inches tall x 5.5 inches wide x 7.5 inches long.

The case labeling indicates it was made in China but otherwise gives no indication who makes it. The label also warns that the product must be kept fully sealed for effective use and is not intended for full submersion (more on this in a moment). The case is also not designed to store food or water, and it is not meant for either microwave or freezer use.

Oddly, although there is no mention of after-sales service or a warranty on the case, Aldi’s website says it comes with a 2-year warranty, backed by The Outdoor Recreation Group.

The case consists of the plastic shell, latch, a hinge, a rubber seal inside the seam, and a rubber tether. The case is textured, making it easy to grip and set down, even when wet, and it feels fairly durable. The plastic tether at the top also gives you another way to grab the case.

The latch takes a bit of practice to use, but it works. To open, you pull out from a small open space at the bottom of the latch, causing the latch to pull out and up. To close the latch, you line up the top of the latch against the upper side of the case and then push in at the bottom.

I tested the case by filling it and then dropping it in both standing and moving water. The case is big enough that I was able to fit my 6.2-inch smartphone, wallet, and keys into it.

The case has an IPX6 rating, meaning it is designed to absorb “powerful water jets.” In my test, I noticed a few things. One, it floated even when I packed it, which is crucial for anything I would bring on water. Two, it kept things pretty dry, even when I ran it under water for a long time. The only water that got in the case came when I opened the case and water dripped in from the seal or the hinges, and it was only a drop or two.

UPDATE (July 2021): I’ve taken this case out on a few excursions since I bought it, including a river kayaking expedition. It’s been sturdy and reliable, and is one of my go-to tools when heading out on the water.

The Verdict:

If you’re headed out on the water and you need a budget box that is watertight and floats, this one deserves a look. It’s easy to use, big enough for a few items, and appears to do what it says it can do.
