Aldi Boston Fern

I’ve never met an Aldi house plant I didn’t like. They’re affordable, and Aldi keeps serving up an array of options to add some greenery to your indoor space, including lucky bamboo, fiddle leaf figs, orchids, succulents, pothos, crotons, aloe, and venus fly traps. The latest selection of plants at Aldi includes Boston ferns.

A Boston Fern in an eight-inch-diameter hanging pot cost $8.99 at Aldi at the time of publication. This is an Aldi Find (Special Buy), which means it’s only at Aldi for a short time.

My fern had been sitting on store shelves for at least a week when I bought it. I had eyed it during my shopping trip the previous week but took a pass, mostly because my cart was already pretty full. When a few ferns were still left the following week, I decided take one home. Some of the lower leaves were a little brown and dry after sitting in the store, but overall the plant still looked healthy, and I simply used a pair of scissors to trim off the dried stems and freshen it up.

The care tag that comes with this potted fern states that the plant prefers medium light and average room temperature. The soil should be kept evenly moist, and a balanced liquid fertilizer can be applied monthly. The tag also states that this plant grows to 12-24 inches tall and 12-24 inches wide.

A bit of internet research indicates the plants prefer normal room temperature (around 55-75 degrees). They also like high humidity, so daily misting is a good idea, or you can keep the plant in a steamy bathroom or place it on a tray of pebbles filled with water to raise the humidity. Either way, you want to make sure the soil remains damp.

Indoors, Boston ferns make great hanging plants, or they can make a striking display on a pedestal. When the weather is mild, they can also be grown outdoors on a porch, patio, or balcony.

Because my plant came in a hanging basket, for now I’ve got it outdoors on my porch during the summer months. The plants need a lot of humidity, so if you’re growing them outdoors you may need to water them daily during the summer so they don’t dry out. Since I’m spending a lot more time at home these days, it’s a little easier to remember to water plants like this.

Boston ferns can thrive outdoors year round if you live in growing zones 9-11. That’s not my situation, so I’ll bring it indoors for the winter and possibly repot it in something that can go on a plant stand.
