Aldi Recalls Fresh Express, Dole, Little Salad Bar, and Simply Nature Salad Kits and Bowls in Select Markets

EDITOR’S NOTE: Dole expanded its recall in January of 2022, and you can read about it here

This week Aldi announced two separate recalls of salad products, both involving potential Listeria contamination in salad kits and salad bowls.

The Fresh Express Recall

The first announcement, issued on December 21, 2021, involves salad kits and bowls that were produced at Fresh Express in Streamwood, Illinois. According to Aldi, the measure is precautionary because Listeria was detected in a product also processed in that same facility. Aldi notes in its press release that it does not carry the product that tested positive (Fresh Express 9-ounce Sweet Hearts Salad Mix), but Aldi is pulling the products “out of an abundance of caution.”

The products impacted include kits and bowls sold under the Fresh Express, Simply Nature, and Little Salad Bar labels.

Aldi is one of several grocers affected by the recall. The FDA reports that the full recall includes retailers in both the United States and Canada. Trader Joe’s does not appear to be affected by this recall.

The recall affects specific products sold in Aldi stores in parts of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. You can read the full Aldi press release below, which includes a listing of the affected Aldi products and the states those products were sold. In addition, you can read a full listing of all products involved in the recall — including those sold by other grocers — on the FDA website.

The Dole Recall

The second announcement, issued on December 23, 2021, involves salad kits and salad bowls produced by Dole in Bessemer City, NC, and Yuma, AZ. As with the Fresh Express recall, the measure was precautionary because Listeria was detected in a product produced in those facilities. Aldi says in its press release that none of its products tested positive but “all products coming from that facility in the relevant time frame were immediately pulled from store shelves out of an abundance of caution.”

The products impacted include kits and bowls sold under the Dole, Simply Nature, and Little Salad Bar labels.

Other grocers are affected by the recall, including Kroger and Lidl. Trader Joe’s does not appear to be affected by this recall. Also, the FDA notes that not all Dole plants and products are affected.

This recall affects specific Aldi products in parts of Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. You can read more in the press release farther down on this page. You can see a listing of all affected products, including non-Aldi products, on the FDA site.
