Aldi is Selling Knock-Off Lay’s French Onion Dip

Aldi has little shame about copying name-brand product packaging. It’s even gotten the company in a little bit of legal trouble in the past. One of Aldi’s recent obvious imitations is the Clancy’s Shelf Stable Snack Dip, which clearly looks like copycat versions of several popular Lay’s and Tostitos brand dips.

Lay's French Onion Dip

The name-brand dip. See something familiar?

Slated to hit Aldi stores September 4, 2019, the Clancy’s dips come in three flavors: Creamy Spinach, French Onion, and Ranch. They are $2.49 for a 15-oz. jar. They’re all gluten free with no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

The Clancy’s French Onion flavor looks a lot like its Lay’s counterpart, down to the red jar label and the picture of the wavy chips covered with dip. Even the brand logo is positioned in the same spot in the upper left corner.

The name brand. This looks familiar, too…

The same can be said for the Ranch flavor. Both the Clancy’s version and the Lay’s version come in a recognizable jar with a blue label and dip-covered ripple chips.

Clancy’s Creamy Spinach Dip, again, looks a lot like name-brand Tostitos dip. (Click to enlarge.)

The Clancy’s Creamy Spinach Dip, meanwhile, looks a lot like Tostitos Creamy Spinach Dip, including the image of fresh veggies on the jar label.

These will be available for a short time as ALDI Finds (Special Buys). That means Aldi will stock a limited supply, and once they’re gone, they’re gone, and no one knows if or when they may be back. So buy them while you can. And because they’re shelf stable, you can easily stock up and they’ll last a while.

We haven’t tried any of these dips yet, since they don’t arrive in stores until September 4, so we don’t know how close they come to tasting like their name-brand counterparts. But they look awfully tempting, so we might have to pick some up when they do hit store shelves.

  1. I hope they decide to make the spinach dip a regular item, because my husband and family all liked it. I only bought one bottle not realizing that everyone would enjoy it. I went back to buy more and found out that it was a one time item. They had 1 jar left which I bought.

  2. Had the ranch, not good at all stick to lays dip
