Are Aldi or Trader Joe’s Affected by the May 2022 Jif Peanut Butter Recall?

On May 20, 2022, The J. M. Smucker Co. issued a recall of certain Jif peanut butter products sold in the United States over concerns of Salmonella contamination. Salmonella can cause serious infections and can be fatal especially to young children, elderly people, and immunocompromised individuals.

The recall affects a specific range of UPC codes and all currently announced products are brand-name Jif peanut butter products. The products were sold nationally at grocery stores and other outlets.

While Aldi did not immediately respond to the recall, on May 25, the grocer announced that it was recalling 28 oz. packages of Jif Creamy Peanut Butter with the UPC code 051500241776 and the lot code 1274425 – 2140425. At this time, the recall does not appear to affect Aldi house brand peanut butter under the Creamy Delight private label.

Trader Joe’s, meanwhile, does not currently appear to be affected, as it makes no mention of the recall on its recall page.

In Association with the J. M. Smucker Co., ALDI Voluntarily Recalls Select Jif 
Products Sold in the U.S. due to Potential Salmonella Contamination

Batavia, Ill. (May 25, 2022) – In cooperation with J.M. Smucker Co., and out of an abundance of caution, ALDI is voluntarily recalling 28 oz. packages of Jif® Creamy Peanut Butter. This is a precautionary measure due to potential contamination with salmonella.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their health care provider.

Upon notification from the supplier, ALDI immediately removed the affected products from all stores in the U.S. The items were also available for purchase through the company’s partnership with Instacart, a grocery delivery service.

To date, no illnesses related to these products have been reported. No other ALDI products are affected by this recall.
