While it’s not the healthiest thing ever, soda is one of my favorite drinks. There aren’t really any kinds that I don’t like. I’ve been familiar with lemon lime sodas for as long as I can remember. While I mostly drink Sprite, I occasionally enjoy 7 Up, which is essentially the same thing.
7 Up was created in 1929 by Charles Leiper Grigg of The Howdy Corporation. It originally contained lithium citrate, a mood stabilizing drug, until 1948. When it launched, it was called “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda” and then eventually shortened to 7 Up. It’s uncertain what the meaning is behind the name. It could have to do with the number of main ingredients, or it could be a refence to the lithium included in the original formula, which has an atomic mass of 7. It could even be that the soda was once sold in 7-ounce bottles. The soda brand is now owned by Keurig Dr. Pepper and distributed by PepsiCo.
Not only can you enjoy 7 Up in its classic drink form. Recently, I found a 7 Up cake at Aldi.
The Bake Shop 7 Up Lemon Lime Cake is $5.49 for 26-ounces. To my surprise, this is a Regular Buy, which means it’s in stores year round.
There are 9 servings per container, with each serving being a single slice. In each serving, there are 310 calories, 15g of total fat, 7g of saturated fat, 230mg of sodium, 42g of total carbohydrates, 28g of total sugars, and 27g of added sugars.
As for allergens, this cake contains wheat, milk, egg, and soy, and it might contain traces of almonds, pecans, and walnuts.

The plastic package is pretty basic, but I wasn’t prepared for how loud it is to open. The lid has to be tight to keep the cake fresh, but you can see how that doesn’t make it easy — or quiet — to open.
To properly review the cake, I got a couple cans of 7 Up so I could thoroughly compare.
The cake looks good enough. It’s a Bundt cake with a classic donut-shaped design with a hole in the middle. The drizzle on top gives it more character.
As for the taste, it doesn’t scream 7 Up. It’s really just your standard lemon or citrus cake. That being said, it was pretty good. It’s moist and soft, and the icing is a nice addition. Cake isn’t my go-to dessert, but I found myself going to get another slice throughout the day.
The Verdict:
The Bake Shop 7 Up Lemon Lime Cake is a solid Regular Buy. For a simple store-bought cake, this would make for a fun dessert for any occasion, and I could see myself buying it again in the future.
