Bauhn Color Changing LED Strip Light

Aldi likes to stock little curios that brighten a room. Over the years, I’ve seen the grocer sell everything from letter boards to fairy lights to novelty lamps. These items tend to be small and inexpensive, accenting a space rather than taking it over. They’re especially nice in smaller spaces, be it a dorm room or even the corner of a large office.

Many of these Aldi offerings are sold under the Bauhn label, which Aldi uses worldwide. Bauhn products are typically electronics accessories, from earbuds to phone chargers. Not long ago, I sighted Bauhn light strips in my local store.

The Bauhn Color Changing LED Strip Light (Product Code: 700650) is an Aldi Find. That means you can only find it in stores for a short time, and once it’s gone, it’s gone, at least until it comes back into stores, if ever. At the time of this post, one strip of lights costs $5.99.

The strip is 6.5 feet long, so it comes out to about 92 cents a foot. You can get a cheaper price per foot on Amazon, but you’re going to have to get more feet total — and pay more total — to get it. If you need, say, 30 feet or 50 feet or 100 feet, you’ll want to look elsewhere. But if you only need 6 feet or even 12 feet, one or two of these is going to be a lower bottom-line price tag than buying one of the larger ones out there.

The lights come out of the box with the following:

• The light strip, attached to a spool
• A USB connector with remote control receiver
• An IR remote control
• An instruction page

These lights are pretty straightforward to install. They come with 3M adhesive backing that can be used by removing the paper strip from the back of the lights. In addition, the lights can be trimmed to your desired length by cutting along one of the vertical lines. (Just make sure not to cut your desired strip off from the connector plug.) To power the lights, you attach one end of the LED connector to the lights, then attach the other to a USB power source like a phone charger, USB dock, or laptop. One consideration is that you’ll need to make sure you place the connector end of the lights close to a power source, as the connector cord is only a couple of feet long.

The strip is controlled entirely by a remote. (Some light strips let you control the lights with Bluetooth, but this is not one of them.) The remote lets you turn the lights on and off, adjust the brightness, change the color, or even set up rotating colors using special effects. It’s pretty intuitive to use and looks identical to some of the remotes I saw on Amazon. The remote is powered by a replaceable CR2025 button battery.

The Verdict:

The Bauhn Color Changing LED Strip Light is a simple, affordable light strip that comes with a couple of bells and whistles, including some neat-looking color-changing functions. The total price is as low as anything I can find, but it’s also only 6.5 feet, so if you need a lot more light, you can get longer strips at a lower price per foot elsewhere. It’s all about your needs.
