Benner Tea Co. Ginger Turmeric Herbal Tea

Last Updated on January 12, 2023

I love to drink tea, and my tea shelf in my pantry is loaded with all kinds of my favorites from Aldi, Trader Joe’s, and other grocers: classic English Breakfast tea, Earl Grey, green tea, herbal supplement teas, Winter Wake Up Tea, maple espresso black tea, Harvest Blend herbal tea, and more.

For years, the Regular Buy tea selection that’s available year round at Aldi has been pretty basic, consisting of mostly black tea, English breakfast, chamomile, and green tea, with maybe one or two other flavors. The discount grocer tends to rotate more unique flavors — floral tea, loose leaf tea, candy cane green tea, etc. — through its shelves as limited-time Aldi Finds.

Then recently I saw some different tea flavors at Aldi. They include Earl Grey (which is a household favorite around here, but I am not sure I’ve ever seen it at Aldi before), chai (which Aldi has previously only sold during the winter holidays), and a ginger turmeric herbal tea.

I’ve heard about turmeric containing potential health benefits, so I picked up a box of the ginger turmeric herbal tea to try at home.

Benner Tea Co. Ginger Turmeric Herbal Tea costs $1.85 at the time of publication for a 1.6-ounce box containing 20 individually wrapped tea bags. That comes out to about 9 cents per serving.

This is a Regular Buy, so you should be able to find it at Aldi all year.

Ingredients are: ginger, turmeric, licorice, orange peel, orange oil, and black pepper. This is an herbal tea, so it does not have caffeine.

Turmeric — and specifically its main active ingredient, curcumin — is considered both a spice and a medicinal herb. If you enjoy Indian food, turmeric, which is related to ginger, is what gives curry its classic yellow color. Curcumin, a compound in turmeric — has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. It can also potentially be good for the heart and may offer some protection against Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. Consuming turmeric with black pepper helps the body to absorb it, and, conveniently, this tea also contains black pepper.

Ginger isn’t just for cookies or bubbly drinks. It also has some health benefits, including nausea relief, and it contains anti-oxidants and may have anti-inflammatory properties.

To make one quart of iced tea, bring fresh cold water to a rolling boil. Pour 4 cups of hot water over 3 to 5 tea bags and steep for 3-5 minutes. Then remove the tea bags and pour the tea over ice-filled glasses.

(Remember that you can dispose of used tea bags in your compost bin.)

This tea has a nice, complex flavor that includes some natural sweetness, maybe from the licorice, so you don’t really need to add sweetener such as honey or sugar unless you really want to. It has a noticeable ginger flavor, but it doesn’t have as strong of a bite or kick as other ginger-based foods and drinks I’ve had. It’s got a pretty mild bite for a ginger-based tea. Still, this tea tasted better than I expected, and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this again.

The Verdict:

Benner Tea Co. Ginger Turmeric Herbal Tea contains ginger, turmeric, licorice, orange peel, orange oil, and black pepper. It has a mild ginger kick and a bit of natural sweetness perhaps owing to the licorice in this blend. Given the potential health benefits of both ginger and turmeric, this tea is a good one to stock in your pantry or at your coffee / tea station.

I’ve recently started brewing the ginger turmeric tea and mixing it to their hot chocolate mix to add something different on cold nights.

I enjoy this tea and am a repeat customer.

  4. This is a “every morning” tea for me as the health benefits + great taste make it a daily MUST. The slight pepper content drive the tumeric absorption. Curcumin in turmeric and piperine in black pepper have been shown to improve health due to their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and disease-fighting qualities.
