Berryhill Hazelnut Spread

In the early 1960s, an Italian baker began marketing a hazelnut chocolate-based butter that was based on a product the baker’s father had developed years before. It became very popular in Europe and later in America. Today, you can find Nutella in grocery stores and sometimes even in restaurants.

When we saw that Aldi had its own version of Nutella, we decided to buy it.

Berryhill Hazelnut Spread is an Aldi Regular Buy, which means you can find it in stores every day. At the time of this post, Aldi’s version comes in a 13-ounce container and costs $2.39, which is about 18 cents an ounce. For comparison, the name brand Nutella is $3.67 cents for 13 ounces at Walmart, or about 25 cents an ounce. Overall, the Aldi hazelnut spread is cheaper than name brand Nutella.

We did a side-by-side taste test. In terms of texture, Nutella is a little thicker and darker than the hazelnut spread, but they both are kind of drippy, like caramel would be. In terms of flavor, the Aldi spread tastes more chocolaty like dark chocolate than Nutella, which has more hints of hazelnut. I prefer the original Nutella over the Aldi spread, but our family thought both were pretty good.

Both Nutella and the Aldi spread have similar ingredients, are both pretty unhealthy, especially with calories, fat, and sugar. The Aldi version has hazelnut and milk, and it may have soy and other tree nuts if those allergens are a problem for you.

The Verdict:

Berryhill Hazelnut Spread has a different taste and texture than Nutella. I prefer the name brand, but my family likes both. The Aldi spread is less expensive, so if you’re looking to save money, you might want to give it a try.
