Bremer Shepherd’s Pie

Aldi has no shortage of frozen, easy, comfort food-style dinners, from chicken pot pie to salisbury steak to lasagna. One option is the Bremer Shepherd’s Pie.

Bremer Shepherd's Pie

Aldi’s Bremer Shepherd’s Pie cost $5.99 for a 30-oz. box at the time of publication. It’s a Regular Buy that is in the store’s freezer section year round. The package describes it as “seasoned minced beef and vegetables in a savory tomato sauce with a buttery mashed potato topping.” It’s gluten free and a product of Canada.

One box has four servings, and one serving has 240 calories, 11 grams of total fat (14% of your daily value), 3.5 grams of saturated fat (18% DV), 35 mg of cholesterol (12% DV), 620 mg of sodium (27% DV), 22 grams of total carbohydrates (8% DV), 2 grams of dietary fiber (7% DV), 2 grams of total sugars, 0 grams of added sugars, and 14 grams of protein.

The first two ingredients are potatoes and ground beef. It also contains corn, peas, and carrots, but when my family was eating this for dinner, we noticed the potatoes and ground beef are definitely the stars here. It’s not exactly light on the veggies, but they’re not exactly the standout in this dish either.

This is a processed product, so it also contains ingredients such as maltodextrin, guar gum, and high fructose corn syrup.

Those with allergies should know this contains milk and anchovy (fish).

The shepherd’s pie can be prepared in a conventional oven or in the microwave.

To heat in a conventional oven, preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Remove the tray from the carton and remove the film from the tray.

Place the tray on a baking sheet on the middle oven rack. Cook for 55 minutes. Halfway through the cook time, rotate the baking sheet.

When finished cooking, remove the sheet from the oven. Let stand for three minutes before serving.

To prepare in the microwave, remove the tray from the carton. Vent two corners by peeling the film back slightly.

Heat on high for 14 minutes.

Remove from the microwave and let stand for three minutes before serving.

Regardless of the cooking method, the shepherd’s pie should be heated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees.

I heated my family’s shepherd’s pie in our conventional oven. It took exactly 55 minutes, as indicated on the package.

My family enjoyed Aldi’s shepherd’s pie, although I’m not sure it was the most memorable meal we’ve ever had. My middle schooler was a fan and repeatedly helped herself to more, though.

We also noted the mashed potato presentation in this meal. The layer of mashed potatoes on top of the casserole looked like they had been applied by a cake decorator’s frosting tip. They were neatly arranged rows of swirled dollops of mashed potatoes, topped with seasonings that looked like they included paprika.

While it’s not the healthiest meal, and it wasn’t as good as homemade shepherd’s pie put together from scratch, it was satisfying. It’s a decent option to keep in the freezer for nights when you aren’t able to cook from scratch.

The Verdict:

Aldi’s Bremer Shepherd’s Pie was a satisfying if not particularly memorable meal. It’s a processed dinner, so it’s not the greatest in terms of healthiness, but it’s fine if you need a no-fuss dinner that’s easy to pop in the oven or microwave.

  1. I choose this dish for my family a couple times a year and they love it. My 23 month old who’s a very picky eater even ate seconds and thirds. Can’t go wrong with Shepherd’s pie. (:

  2. It’s in stock year round here in Grand Rapids MI

  3. This is awesome why isn’t the Oldsmar store stocking it. Do I have to move to Grand Rapids 😁

  4. When I first bought the Shepherd’s pie from Aldi’s, I was so happy because I am celiac and it was gluten free. It was very good. The second time I bought it, the same. The third time I bought it, the amount of vegetables was about a tablespoon. I thought it was just a fluke. I bought it the fourth time, half the dish had No vegetables, the other half had about a teaspoon of vegetables. I won’t be buying it the fifth time.

  5. Great tasting product, I have tried other brands and this is the best by far.

  6. Perhaps this has been pointed out already but this dish would more correctly be called “Cottage Pie” given it is more similar to the English dish made with beef. Shepherd’s pie on the other hand is an Irish dish made from lamb. While some will suggest it is a trivial distinction, I would charge the distinction not trivial in the least to the English or the Irish who rightfully claim ownership as traditional dishes of their culture. When you can take liberties substituting chicken for pork in Canadian Bacon, or papaya seeds for beluga caviar, then you can assume the liberty to use Cottage pie and Shepherd’s pie interchangeably.

  7. I love it! Why can’t I buy it anymore in my area?

    • I like it too. Perhaps that the Canadian border is now open we will start getting food stuffs again from Canada.

  8. My wife is from Australia where they have good Shepherd’s pies baked in all the local bakeries. I found that this pie was more potato than meat. It was nothing like in the photo. As for taste on a scale of 1 to 10 I will give it a 3 and it is over priced. I do not buy many things ready to eat but sometimes the wife and I don’t feel like cooking. We were very disappointed. We both can make much better ones. We are retired and like to cook. I do love the Bremer meat and mushroom meatballs. They don’t have pork in them like the regular meatballs. They are very good and I have tried other Bremer items and will buy some of them again. I nix this one.

  9. I live in Bellevue, ne. and shop at Aldi’s on a regular basis. We absolutely love their shepherds pie but now we can’t get , they said it was seasonal. According to the website it says stocked year round. We are very disappointed, it was our go to fast meal on busy days. 😩

why can’t we get the gluten-free frozen stew mix or Shepherds Pie anymore at Aldies?

  11. Apparently, the folks at Bremer have no concept of what a SHEPHERD’S Pie is. Ground beef does NOT a Sheoherd’s Pie make. It takes LAMB. Lamb=shepherd, get it?

This is a cow patty pie. Not a Shepherd’s pie.

  12. Put more vegies in it, and eliminate the high fructose corn syrup!

  13. Freezer to oven or defrost first?

  14. My husband and I LOVE it. Our ALDIs doesn’t have it anymore. Suggestions on where I could buy some? Thanks

  15. My Aldi’s in Saginaw told me it was a seasonal.maybe back next winter. I will keep looking for this family favorite.

  16. This is one of my favorite meals. If I go out to eat, and shepherds pie is on the menu, I get it every time! I do like to cook, but this recipe is a commitment. To be able to throw it in the oven, and eat it within an hour – AWESOME. Not to mention, it is as good – maybe better – than mine! I will buy this again, and again!

  17. Baked at 375 for 55 minutes. During the 1/2 way turn covered it with a good amount of chopped up u salted butter. Fresh ground black pepper crushed rosemary and a small bit of dried thyme. 10/10. Came out perfect. Closest you’ll get unless you go to the UK.

  18. I like it and add frozen mixed veggies to the bottom before cooking. Just flip the frozen chunk out of the tray and add veggies. Fits back together fine and adds a little extra! I also squirt some ketchup on the veggies, because as mentioned it’s not too tomatoey.

  19. This is a really nice reliable piece of comfort food. Out of curiosity I tried the Walmart Great Value version – no comparison. The Great Value was both bad tasting and flavorless.

  20. Dr. Joel S. Keller

Can leftovers of this dish be refrozen?

  21. Why isn’t the Bremmer Shepherds pie in Toms River or Lacey NJ store anymore? Also the Kirkwood box of Panko breaded chicken patties in the blue box
