Chef’s Cupboard French Fried Onions (and Green Bean Casserole Recipe)

Last Updated on April 24, 2021

With the holiday season now in full swing, green bean casserole will be making its annual appearance on many family dinner tables. For years, I’ve been purchasing Aldi’s Chef’s Cupboard French Fried Onions to make green bean casserole, and no one ever suspects I’m using ingredients that aren’t name brand.

French Fried Onions

These 6-ounce cans of onions used to be a Regular Buy item, but in recent years it seems Aldi has turned them into a seasonal item that is only available during the winter holidays, and even then we sometimes have trouble finding them.

Using them is pretty straightforward. You can use them in green bean casserole, or the can suggests sprinkling them on burgers, salads, sandwiches, and fresh vegetables. You also can substitute French Fried Onions for breadcrumbs on chicken, meatloaf, pork, and fish. The can states they are “original,” and I think Aldi may sell cheesy-flavored French Fried Onions as well, but I didn’t see any other varieties during a recent shopping trip.

The can includes a standard recipe for green bean casserole.

The Recipe:

Ingredients:

3 cans (14.5 oz.) cut green beans, drained

1 can (10.5 oz.) Chef’s Cupboard Cream of Mushroom Soup

3/4 cup milk

1 1/2 cups Chef’s Cupboard French Fried Onions

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients except French Fried Onions; place in medium casserole dish and bake for 30 minutes.
  2. Remove from oven; stir.
  3. Top with French Fried Onions. Bake 5 minutes more or until onions are golden brown. Makes 6 servings.

Chef’s Thoughts:

I use this recipe as a starting point for my own green bean casserole but don’t follow it exactly. I prefer to use only 2 cans of green beans instead of 3, so the onions can really stand out in the finished dish. I also mix about 1/4 cup of the onions into the green bean and soup mixture prior to baking it for 30 minutes to add a little more flavor.

The Verdict:

Aldi’s Chef’s Cupboard French Fried Onions are the real deal. Use them in your green bean casserole this holiday season, and no one will know you didn’t use name brand. Highly recommended.

I also have been using Chef’s Cupboard onions for years. No one knows they are not name brand.

  2. I live in New Jersey 087(9 there are 3 different Aldis in my area I buy this item by the case which is 12 cans most of the time all stores are out of this product how can I get this product?????? Any help would be appreciated

  3. I hesitated to buy these, being that my family looks forward to the traditional Green Bean Casserole, and if the topping is “off”, it will ruin the dish for everyone.

I no longer feel the hesitation.

P.S. I grew up believing that my mother invented Green Bean Casserole, and it was a family secret. It’s amazing to know that it’s a national tradition. I wonder if everyone believed, at one time, that it was just their family that loved this!

  4. Aldi has now switched to a bag version of French fried onions, and since has changed their recipe on the back of the package. I haven’t followed the new recipe but I’m glad to see the original still online. Thank you!!
PS the new one calls for bagged green beans and soy sauce
