Chef’s Cupboard Onion Recipe, Soup & Dip Mix

French onion dip is a family favorite. We especially love it with plain potato chips and often enjoy it during holidays or family gatherings. French onion dip can also pair well with fresh vegetables or with crackers.

Aldi sells a ready-made French onion dip in its refrigerated case that we like. They also stock an onion soup and dip mix in the dry goods section that makes a great onion dip. When I wanted to serve veggies and dip as part of a recent holiday meal, I bought the Aldi dip mix.

So far, I’ve only made the dip with this mix, and it is fantastic. The dip is extremely easy to make. You simply mix the contents of one envelope with one 16-ounce container of sour cream. It makes a thick dip that I think works best with vegetables. This is good with potato chips and crackers, but because it has a firmer consistency, your chips and crackers may break more easily when you dip them.

My kids can be picky about what sorts of veggie dips they like. I’ve made fancy homemade dips that they turn their noses up at, and store-bought dips like Marzetti can be hit or miss depending on the flavor. However, they love dip made with this mix, and it’s a great way to motivate kids (and kids at heart) to eat their veggies. We love it served with cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, and sugar snap peas. It would also be good with celery or peppers.

The Verdict:

Chef’s Cupboard Onion Recipe, Soup & Dip Mix has directions for making soup, meatloaf, and dip for chips or veggies. We love the dip, which only requires adding one container of sour cream. We think the dip is best served with veggies that can stand up to a thick dip. Potato chips are good with this dip as well, but sometimes they break because the dip is so thick. This is a great way to encourage people to eat their veggies.

Yet another Aldi product that’s high in sodium. Some of the German soups are excessive, many others almost as bad.

    • This dip mix has slightly less sodium than its name brand Lipton counterpart. To be fair, with processed products like this — or the canned soups — you just know there’s going to be a lot of sodium no matter what grocery store sells it. It’s not just Aldi.

    • Have used this product in meatloaf, and it’s good. Adjusting the other ingredients can help with sodium. Use low sodium canned diced tomatoes or tomato sauce instead of ketchup, and rolled oats instead of breadcrumbs (no need to grind-they totally disappear).

      • Good points, Lisa. I also think any time you’re mixing this with other ingredients — such as ground beef for meatloaf, or a container of sour cream for dip — you’re probably diluting the sodium concentration.

Toss about 1 1/2 lbs. of halved baby potatoes (or regular potatoes cut into about 1″ chunks) with a packet of this and 2 tablespoons of cooking oil, put them in your air fryer’s basket and cook on the French Fry cycle, and you’ll get quick & easy roasted potatoes. (This smooshes together the Lipton soup recipe and the Cosori cook-booklet recipe for similar dishes.)

  3. Definitely works for Liptons Onion Soup meatloaf and is considerably less expensive.

  4. I live in Michigan. My distribution center is in webberville which supplies the south eastern part of the state including metro Detroit. We have not had sour cream chip dip in our store’s dairy case for months now. I finally asked the other day if we were ever going to get it back and was told yes She said they were having supply chain issues. She said that at the moment they did have it in the cooler. So I excitedly headed that way. But when I got there, they only had the friendly farms sour cream and not the chip dip. So in desperation, I grabbed three containers of it. She was probably right that they did have both in the refrigerator case, but that was 30 seconds before and everybody inhaled the chip dip. I wish I would have known that they also had the basic onion mix there. I haven’t used that stuff for years. It was okay when I was young but now it just seems so salty to me also. But I don’t want good chip dip bad enough to pay twice as much for the name brand dip that Aldi has. The good news is I will get to make mine fresh from scratch. I have lots of onions and chives and other seasonings growing in my backyard. So mine will it be even better I hope. Is anybody else having problems getting sour cream products from the Aldi brand?

I buy the onion soup mix all the time I opened a box today and only one envelope was inside

  6. Why did this say that it contains wheat because of the tamari soy sauce when tamari sauce is made without wheat…it’s gluten free?

    • While some tamari sauce is made without wheat, the sauce in this mix does contain wheat. (Click or tap the photo above to view the ingredients list.) Therefore, this mix is not gluten free.
