Aldi sells all the traditional Easter candy goodies such as Starburst jelly beans, small foil-wrapped chocolate eggs, Peeps, and name-brand chocolate mini candy bar mixes that include Snickers, 3 Musketeers, and the like. Aldi also sells some novel European chocolates. One that has often caught my eye is the Choceur Chocolate Surprise Egg. This is a large, hollow chocolate egg filled with smaller chocolate pieces. It looked like it could be fun to crack open, so I bought some during a recent shopping trip when I was picking up some necessities.
The Choceur Chocolate Surprise Egg cost $4.99 for 12.35 ounces at the time of publication. It comes in two varieties: milk creme truffles inside a milk chocolate egg, or European assorted chocolates inside a milk chocolate egg. I got both to try. Remember, these eggs are a limited-time ALDI Find (Special Buy) and will only be in stores for a short time. Once they’re gone, you’ll have to wait until next Easter.

As stated above, these consist of a large hollow chocolate egg filled with small truffle-like chocolates. When you begin unwrapping the cardboard and cellophane packaging, you’ll find two hollow chocolate egg halves wrapped in foil, with a clear plastic bag holding the smaller chocolates. We discovered that the large eggs were not entirely intact upon opening the packages. One egg was mostly still together, while the other had broken into numerous fragments. They still tasted good, but be aware that if perfect aesthetics are important to you, these eggs might disappoint. The eggs could benefit from some packaging that offers more protection.

This is the more traditional of the chocolate egg varieties, and it is fun and perfectly fine. The small chocolates inside this egg are round and have a creamy filling.
Ingredients are: sugar, butter, milk, palm oil, chocolate, skim milk, sunflower oil, lactose, whey, soy lecithin, and natural flavor. People with allergies should be aware these contain milk and soy.
There are about 12 30-gram servings per package. One serving has 170 calories, 10 grams of total fat (13% DV), 25 mg of sodium (1% DV), 17 grams of total carbohydrates (6% DV), 16 grams of total sugars, 14 grams of added sugars (28% DV), and 2 grams of protein.

The chocolate flavors inside this egg are: soft caramel covered with rice crisp and milk chocolate, chocolate with cocoa cream filling and chopped hazelnuts, chocolate with milk filling and chopped hazelnuts, and doubletto caramel and cocoa. An illustrated guide on the back of the cardboard packaging tells you what you’re getting so there are no uncertainties.
While some family members said they preferred the other egg with the more traditional milk creme filled truffles, these little European chocolates were the first ones to disappear. Everyone seemed to enjoy sampling the different flavors, and we especially liked the caramel chocolates and the doubletto caramel and cocoa chocolates. The variety made it fun, as each flavor has a different appearance, and these were much better-tasting chocolates than the mystery (often gross or mediocre) chocolates inside a conventional box of assorted chocolates. No complaints here.

People with allergies should be aware these contain milk, soy, wheat, and hazelnuts.

The Verdict:
Aldi’s Choceur Chocolate Surprise Eggs consist of large, hollow milk chocolate eggs filled with smaller truffles or assorted European chocolates. The chocolate eggs don’t always hold up well without cracking in transit from factory to store to home, but they taste good. If you want something a little different for Easter this year, these are worth trying.
