Choceur Melting Snowman

Last Updated on December 10, 2021

Hot chocolate bombs are one of the more unique viral food trends to show up lately. This novel way to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate involves dropping a ball of chocolate into a cup of hot milk. As the chocolate shell melts, it “explodes” and reveals cocoa powder and often mini marshmallows. You gently stir it all up to create the perfect cup of hot cocoa.

Boise State University graduate Eric Torres-Garcia claims to have invented hot cocoa bombs in 2019. He bought ingredients to make a cocoa bomb, then posted a video on TikTok revealing his culinary creation. The video shows him dropping a cocoa bomb into a mug. Then he pours hot milk over it, and the cocoa bomb bursts open to reveal small snowman marshmallows. The video was a wild success and — long story short — by the end of that night he had taken orders for nearly 1,000 hot chocolate bombs.

Nowadays, hot cocoa bombs are everywhere. You can find recipes to make them yourself (and you’ll need to purchase special molds), or you can purchase them from various retailers. Even Aldi’s cousin Trader Joe’s sells its own take on hot chocolate bombs.

And this year, in 2021, Aldi also got in on the trend. The discount grocery store just rolled out these adorable white chocolate snowmen filled with marshmallows and dark chocolate drops. They’re perfect for dropping in a cup of hot milk for a unique and entertaining warm treat.

Choceur Melting Snowman

The Choceur Melting Snowman cost $1.99 for a 2.65-ounce snowman at the time of publication. It’s a product of Germany, and the cocoa is Rainforest Alliance Certified.

This is an Aldi Find, which means it’s only in stores for a short time. (And no, Aldi won’t ship it to you if it’s not in stock at your local store.)

Ingredients are: sugar, cocoa butter, dry whole milk, chocolate liquor, glucose fructose syrup, soy lecithin, water, beef gelatin, dextrose, corn starch, natural flavoring, and beta carotene (color).

If you’re watching out for allergens, this contains milk, soy, and wheat. It may contain tree nuts.

Naturally, one snowman equals one serving. One snowman has a whopping 400 calories, 23 grams of total fat (29% DV), 15 grams of saturated fat (75% DV), 15 mg of cholesterol (5% DV), 80 mg of sodium (3% DV), 45 grams of total carbohydrates (16% DV), less than 1 gram of dietary fiber (3% DV), 43 grams of total sugars, 36 grams of added sugars (72% DV), and 4 grams of protein.

I’m also assuming all that nutrition info is before you add the milk to make your hot cocoa. The snowman alone is loaded with calories, saturated fat, and added sugar. In other words, once you add milk, this packs a big punch nutritionally, and not really in a healthy way. This is loaded with a lot more calories, sugar, and fat than traditional hot chocolate packets, so just keep that in mind as you indulge.

This should be kept in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to use it.

The preparation instructions are as follows:

  1. Put the snowman into hot milk.
  2. Watch the snowman melt.
  3. Stir and enjoy!

This was a fun drink to make. I bought several snowmen so each person in my household could try one. The first time I made one, I used one of my larger mugs to make sure that it could accommodate both the milk and the snowman bomb.

I filled the mug about three quarters of the way full with milk and microwaved it for two minutes, then dropped the snowman in. At first he bobbed around and I kept a finger on top of his little hat to help keep him upright. I had to be careful not to push the snowman down too deep into the milk, thus causing the milk to overflow from the cup. It didn’t take long for his bottom half to melt, and then his top half dropped into the mug, and I gently stirred for a couple of minutes to mix it all together. Eventually a few mini marshmallows floated to the surface.

Giving one of our snowmen a dunk.

This hot cocoa bomb tastes good once it’s all dissolved into a mug of hot milk. It’s rich and creamy. Because there’s a lot of white chocolate in this snowman, the hot cocoa has a lighter color than a traditional cup of hot chocolate made from a powdered mix.

The snowman looks like it’s taking a bath in warm milk.

These are a fun way to entertain the kids on a cold winter night. They would also be great stocking stuffers, teacher gifts, neighbor gifts, or good for any situation where you need a small Christmas gift.

The Verdict:

The Choceur Melting Snowman features a cute white chocolate snowman filled with mini marshmallows and dark chocolate drops. Dunk the snowman into a mug of hot milk, and watch it melt and turn into a delicious hot cocoa treat. This makes for some creative entertainment, or give one as a holiday gift.
