Choceur Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups (2020)

Last Updated on November 10, 2020

The popular peanut butter cups at Aldi have changed again.

I picked up a bag of the popular Choceur Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups as a snack for a recent family cabin camping trip, and we noticed two things: the peanut butter cups are now individually wrapped in foil and they taste different.

Around the same time, we started getting comments from readers who are unhappy with how the new peanut butter cups taste.

So, it’s time to take another look at the Aldi peanut butter cups.

We initially reviewed Aldi’s Choceur Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups in 2018. They were good at that time, but not as good as name-brand Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Then Aldi changed the formula, and we reviewed the peanut butter cups again in 2019, and they were spectacular. The new recipe was so good that the Aldi peanut butter cups beat out the competition in a Taste of Home blind taste test.

Since then, Aldi has had a difficult time keeping the peanut butter cups in stock in its stores because the demand was so high.

So what’s different about the new peanut butter cups, besides the fact that they used to be sold unwrapped in a bag and no are individually wrapped?

I compared the nutrition information for the peanut butter cups in our 2019 review with the nutrition information on the peanut butter cups currently in stores, and there are a few key differences.

  • The new peanut butter cups have almost half the sodium of the older, popular peanut butter cups.
  • The new peanut butter cups have more carbs, more sugar, and slightly more calories (although the serving size went from 31 grams to 35 grams, so that accounts for some of the increase).
  • The new peanut butter cups use flour salt instead of sea salt.

These PB cups have 190 calories per 35-gram serving, along with 11 grams of total fat (14% DV), 7 grams of saturated fat 35% DV), 55 mg of sodium (2% DV), 21 grams of total carbohydrates (7% DV), 19 grams of added sugars, and 3 grams of protein.

In addition, the price for the peanut butter cups went from $2.69 for a 12-oz. bag to $2.99 for a 12-oz. bag.

Aldi is known to change its recipes and formulas from time to time. We’ve seen it most notably with their jarred Indian sauces and their canned olives. We never know quite why the changes are made, but we assume it has to do with suppliers or cost.

As far as how the new peanut butter cups taste, we agree with some of our readers who have commented that they don’t have as much peanut butter flavor. We also think the new peanut butter cups have a dominant flavor that is more sweet rather than a nuanced salty-and-sweet flavor like the old ones, and this is confirmed when we look at how much less salt is in the new recipe.

Even the texture is different with these new peanut butter cups. They aren’t as smooth, and they seem to have less peanut butter inside them. The old popular PB cups had an almost waxy-textured chocolate shell, and although some people didn’t care for that, it had a satisfying type of crunch to it when you bit through it. Not so with this new formulation.

Choceur Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

Overall, they’re decent peanut butter cups, but they’re not like Reese’s. Instead, they’re just standard generic, off-brand peanut butter cups.

The Verdict:

Choceur Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups are on at least their third formulation in as many years. This new recipe has less sodium than the old Aldi peanut butter cups, and we don’t like the taste or texture as much. They’re not bad peanut butter cups, but they’re not fantastic like the old ones were. Instead, they’re just decent off-brand PB cups that don’t bear a strong resemblance to Reese’s.

  1. Thanks for the warning…they just lost another sale (multiplied by ?) . BTW, the taste test was originally published in Taste of Home, March 15, 2019 and there’s a recipe for homemade peanut butter cups on that website:https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/homemade-peanut-butter-cups/ I’ll be eating those instead.

    • Thanks for pointing that out. We’ve updated the post.

    • These were the best peanut butter cups and the price was good, but unfortunately they had to cheapen quality and increase price, probably do to being individually wrapped, which is not an improvement as far as I am concerned!
The main reason I shopped at Aldies every week was so I could get these, but haven’t been able to find those in the Youngstown, Oh area for about 2 months and no longer shop at Aldies every week now, maybe once a month now, if that !!!!!!!

  2. Well, I only found the Peanut Butter cups a few months ago and they are, WERE the best I had ever had. I bought 5 more bags. I will not be buying the new wrapped ones. My waistline will thank you.

  3. enough is enough

Thanks for this info. They were delicious and addictive AND usually out of stock starting in NOVEMBER. Now that they are wrapped and not as good I will not suffer the extra calories because I will not purchase any more!

  4. Funny, I didn’t really care for the old ones. The chocolate was too thick and hard for me. I really like these new ones!

  5. Have they changed the recipe again? I bought some (for the first time) early this year and they weren’t individually wrapped.

  6. As of July 2021, our local Aldis in Pennsylvania is still selling the ones without the foil. Doesn’t seem to be any change, tastes great as usual, we like them better than Reeses.

  7. In South Jersey Aldi, they still carry the non-wrapped PB cups and they are phenomenal. I tried ordering them via Instacart a few times and they always had to substitute for regular Reese’s cups. Now I stop in Aldi whenever I pass to check on a few of my favorite items and stock up when they have them.
