Choceur Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

EDITOR’S NOTE (October 2020): We’ve recently become aware that Aldi has (again) changed their peanut butter cups, either through a new supplier or a new formula from their existing supplier. The vast majority of Aldi’s Regular Buy products are private label house brands. Instead of national brands like, say, General Mills, Aldi sells Millville. Aldi contracts various companies to supply these private label brands, sometimes even using rebranded national brand products at a lower price.

We like most of Aldi’s house brand products. Some of them are merely competent, while others are as good as a national brand. On top of that, Aldi is known to tweak its private label products, possibly contracting different companies to supply the same product. While these tweaks are not always for the better, they often are, as we saw with Aldi’s Cheese Club Mac and Cheese.

In 2018, we reviewed Choceur Bite Size Milk Chocolate Creamy Peanut Butter Cups, an Aldi Regular Buy that was … okay. It wasn’t as good as a name brand Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, but on its own merits it was fine. And then, a little ways into 2019, we began hearing word online that Aldi had tweaked the product for the better. How much better? Well, according to Reader’s Digest, the new and improved Choceur peanut butter cups beat out the rest of the competition — including Reese’s itself — in a blind taste test.

That sent us back to Aldi to try out these new peanut butter cups.

Choceur Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups are an Aldi Regular Buy, meaning they’re in store year-round. They run $2.69 for a 12-ounce bag. The bag comes with roughly 33 peanut butter cups. The individual cups do not come with any sort of wrapper, so there’s no fuss there.

So how are they? In a word: sensational.

Everything about them works to perfection. The chocolate outer coating has just the right blend of sweetness, as well as a hint of a shell that cracks when you bite into it, a little bit like when you eat a dipped cone. The peanut butter is creamy, smooth, and just the right amount of saltiness.

I love Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. I think these are better.

To no one’s surprise, these are a sweet, so they’re particularly high in fat and sugar. They also contain milk, peanuts, and soy, and may contain tree nuts and wheat, so be aware if your dietary restrictions prohibit any of those. On the other hand, the packaging notes that 27% of the ingredients are Fair Trade Certified — including the cocoa butter, chocolate liquor, and vanilla extract — so these also contribute to sustainable farming practices. The packaging also notes that these are kosher dairy.

These newly formulated peanut butter cups are such a hit that they have become difficult to find in stores. Their spot on the shelves among the other chocolate and candy at our local Aldi stores is usually empty. So if you find a bag, consider yourself lucky.

The Verdict:

The Choceur Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups are not only a major improvement in taste over the old Coceur Peanut Butter Cups, but we think they’re better than their national brand counterparts. The fact that they don’t come in wrapping and are Fair Trade Certified are icing on the cake. Highly recommended, if you can find this popular product in stores.
