Choceur Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

Last Updated on November 8, 2020

EDITOR’S NOTE (October 2020): We’ve recently become aware that Aldi has (again) changed their peanut butter cups, either through a new supplier or a new formula from their existing supplier. These new peanut butter cups are wrapped in foil (unlike the ones that weren’t). You can read our review of the new peanut butter cups here

The vast majority of Aldi’s Regular Buy products are private label house brands. Instead of national brands like, say, General Mills, Aldi sells Millville. Aldi contracts various companies to supply these private label brands, sometimes even using rebranded national brand products at a lower price.

We like most of Aldi’s house brand products. Some of them are merely competent, while others are as good as a national brand. On top of that, Aldi is known to tweak its private label products, possibly contracting different companies to supply the same product. While these tweaks are not always for the better, they often are, as we saw with Aldi’s Cheese Club Mac and Cheese.

In 2018, we reviewed Choceur Bite Size Milk Chocolate Creamy Peanut Butter Cups, an Aldi Regular Buy that was … okay. It wasn’t as good as a name brand Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, but on its own merits it was fine. And then, a little ways into 2019, we began hearing word online that Aldi had tweaked the product for the better. How much better? Well, according to Reader’s Digest, the new and improved Choceur peanut butter cups beat out the rest of the competition — including Reese’s itself — in a blind taste test.

That sent us back to Aldi to try out these new peanut butter cups.

Choceur Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

Choceur Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups are an Aldi Regular Buy, meaning they’re in store year-round. They run $2.69 for a 12-ounce bag. The bag comes with roughly 33 peanut butter cups. The individual cups do not come with any sort of wrapper, so there’s no fuss there.

So how are they? In a word: sensational.

Everything about them works to perfection. The chocolate outer coating has just the right blend of sweetness, as well as a hint of a shell that cracks when you bite into it, a little bit like when you eat a dipped cone. The peanut butter is creamy, smooth, and just the right amount of saltiness.

I love Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. I think these are better.

To no one’s surprise, these are a sweet, so they’re particularly high in fat and sugar. They also contain milk, peanuts, and soy, and may contain tree nuts and wheat, so be aware if your dietary restrictions prohibit any of those. On the other hand, the packaging notes that 27% of the ingredients are Fair Trade Certified — including the cocoa butter, chocolate liquor, and vanilla extract — so these also contribute to sustainable farming practices. The packaging also notes that these are kosher dairy.

These newly formulated peanut butter cups are such a hit that they have become difficult to find in stores. Their spot on the shelves among the other chocolate and candy at our local Aldi stores is usually empty. So if you find a bag, consider yourself lucky.

The Verdict:

The Choceur Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups are not only a major improvement in taste over the old Coceur Peanut Butter Cups, but we think they’re better than their national brand counterparts. The fact that they don’t come in wrapping and are Fair Trade Certified are icing on the cake. Highly recommended, if you can find this popular product in stores.

  1. We’re on our third bag (in a month, not a day!) and wholeheartedly agree with you…they are sensational! The size of them is also perfect; you can just pop one into your mouth for an almost guilt-free treat, or if you can handle the fat and sugar, have more. It’s hard to eat just one!

  2. I wholeheartedly agree with this review. The Choceur PB cups are so good, I had to stop buying them because they were too delish to resist!

  3. I strongly suspect that the Choceur chocolate at Aldi’s is actually Lindt.

    • A couple bags fall into my cart every time I go to Aldi (including today). They stay stashed in my closet or hidden in a box in the freezer. They are the only peanut butter cups to rival Reeses and I have to agree, they come out on top.

  4. I agree 100%!! This is the only chocolate I crave on my “special lady time” now. And I could easily go through a bag in a day, but I try my best to control myself. Try them chilled in the fridge, it’s amazing!

  5. I looked for them in two different Aldi stores and could not find them. I’ll have to ask if they are discontinued or just out of stock because of high demand.

  6. You could try: https://shop.aldi.us/store/aldi/search_v3/choceur%20peanut%20butter%20cups and enter your address or another you would be willing to travel to to get them.

  7. I finally found a bag in my local Aldi and I feel like they taste more like Gertrude Hawk chocolate.

These are the best peanut butter cups that I have ever tasted! To me, the Reeses brand is too sweet and the peanut butter texture is not as smooth. I also noticed that the Aldi brand has a little thicker chocolate coating. Actually the chocolate tastes better too, the flavor is on point. You will not be disappointed and can definitely become addicted to them. A big thumbs up!!

  9. So loved the unwrapped peanut butter cups but recently purchased the same brand from Aldi which are individually wrapped and my wife and I think they are not the same product. Something changed and they do not melt or taste the same. What gives ??

  10. Just purchased a bag of these that have been missing from the stores for a long time. These are not the same as before. Barely there peanut butter flavor. They are in different packaging, i.e individually wrapped. Disappointed the quality has gone downhill. Bring back the old recipe, please.

    • I agree. Will not be buying the individual wrapped ones again. The old kind were amazing, the new style taste old and the chocolate is not nearly as good.

  11. I absolutely 100% agree with you. These are the best peanut butter cups I had ever eaten.
