Cook House Tikka Masala Sauce

EDITOR’S NOTE: You can read about Aldi’s other Indian food here and here. Also, you can read about some of the changes made to Aldi’s Journey to India Tikka Masala Sauce here

Aldi just can’t seem to stop making tweaks to its jarred tikka masala sauce. They’ve made so many changes to the formula that we have whiplash over here. In the past year, we’ve now seen four different variations on the sauce, all with different calorie amounts and different ingredients.

Cook House sauces

Our local Aldi. Notice that the Journey to India price sticker is still on the shelf.

The latest version of Aldi’s tikka masala is the Cook House Tikka Masala sauce, which I noticed in my local store this week. It sold for $1.99 for a 15-oz. jar at the time of publication.

You may notice in the picture above that the price sign on the store shelf still bears the former Journey to India name, but all the Journey to India jars were removed from the shelf and replaced with Cook House Tikka Masala, along with Cook House Korma as well. At some point, Aldi also removed the Journey to India Jalfrezi Sauce it used to carry.

At first glance, this looks like a big change because the previous Regular Buy tikka masala sauces at Aldi were all under the Journey to India house brand name. Aldi has never sold tikka masala under its Cook House brand name before. Cook House is another private label Aldi brand that offers a variety of sauces, ranging from marinades for beef and chicken to simmer sauces to huevos rancheros sauce.

The Cook House Tikka Masala is described on the jar as “a tomato-based simmer sauce with ginger and coriander.”

The Cook House sauce has 50 calories per serving, 3 grams of total fat (3% of your daily value), 0.5 grams of saturated fat (1% DV), 0 mg of cholesterol, 210 mg of sodium (9% DV), 6 grams of total carbohydrates (2% DV), 1 gram of fiber (1% DV), 1 gram of added sugars (3% DV), and 1 gram of protein.

The Cook House sauce contains milk, and it may contain peanuts and tree nuts.

The preparation instructions state the sauce is best for sauteing (add to a wok or skillet for a quick and easy flavor enhancer), roasting (pour on top before placing in the oven), or slow cooking (add to the slow cooker and let the sauce simmer).

Cooking instructions say to heat oil in a saute pan. Season chicken with salt and pepper, and brown evenly in hot oil. Add green and red peppers along with the entire jar of simmer sauce. Cover the pan and simmer over low heat for 10-12 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Serve with rice.

How Is the New Sauce Different?

In the past, Aldi has sold three other versions of tikka masala under the Journey to India label:

  1. Journey to India Tikka Masala with 70 calories per serving and including ingredients such as coconut creme and garam masala. This was the best version by far.
  2. Journey to India Tikka Masala with only 45 calories per serving. It was bland, tasting like tomato sauce with a minimum of seasoning, and it lacked ingredients like coconut creme and garam masala. Most online talk about the sauces was negative in regard to the 45-calorie version.
  3. Journey to India Tikka Masala with 60 calories per serving. My family thought it was okay but not as good as the original. It still lacked some of the key ingredients the original sauce had.

A comparison of ingredients in the new Cook House Tikka Masala indicates that it’s nearly identical to Journey to India 45-calorie tikka masala. The first ingredient in both sauces is water, which is telling, and the rest of the ingredients are identical and in order after that.

The proportions of some of those ingredients may differ slightly because the Cook House sauce has 210 mg of sodium and 3 grams of fat versus the 45-calorie sauce’s 180 mg of sodium and 2.5 grams of fat. Both are healthier than the original Journey to India 70-calorie tikka masala, which had 330 mg of sodium and 4.5 grams of fat.

But you pay for that health improvement with less taste. My family tried the Cook House Tikka Masala for dinner with some chicken, basmati rice, naan, and samosas. Opinions ranged from bland to okay. It tasted a lot like the 45-calorie tikka masala. So, while it looks like a big product change because of the new name, it does not actually appear to be much of a change.

The Verdict:

Aldi has now carried four different varieties of Regular Buy tikka masala sauce during the past year. The latest version is Cook House Tikka Masala Sauce. A glance at the ingredients list indicates it is practically identical to the previous Journey to India 45-calories-per-serving tikka masala sauce (which has been thoroughly panned by Aldi fans online). The Cook House sauce has slightly higher calories, fat, and sodium than the 45-calorie sauce, but the differences weren’t big enough for my family to notice a significant taste difference. My family was not impressed enough to convince me to buy more. We’ll be over here waiting for Aldi to bring back the original, perfect 70 calories-per-serving Journey to India Tikka Masala.

  1. I thought the Cook House version was a step back in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go. Frustrating!

    • I bought it once again the other day in hopes that I could help it along by adding 1.5t. Of Garamond masala. We shall see…(fingers crossed).

      • I too tried the Tikka masala sauce and was disappointed in the taste. Very bland, they could have added more spices to it to give it that richer taste. I miss the previous back to India version which was very good.

    • Apologies – I have never had either the “original” or the 45 calorie version
But the Cook House version I had was tasty enough, easy prep and very importantly- passed muster with the target audience of 13 yr old boys in my house
I’ll watch for the original “Journey To India” version. But will purchase more Cook House

    • I love the Cook House Tikki Marsala Aldi carries. The spices are perfect and for my picky husband who does not eat Indian food, he loved it. I hope they keep carrying the product.

  2. We always enjoyed the tikka masala sauce from Aldi, until now. The new sauce by Cook House is watery and doesn’t taste as good, so it’s a huge disappointment. Thankfully our local Costco carries a brand of tikka masala sauce that’s much better.

  3. I’m so glad I found this page and I’m not alone! Thank you Rachael for making these reviews! When I found the original 70 calorie version at Aldi a few years ago, I was in love. Nothing from any other brand at any other store could compare. I’ve been craving it and I made an Instacart order today and was given a 60 calorie, 15 oz, Cook House brand (which is actually identical in the ingredient list to the 60 calorie Journey to India I saw in another one of Rachael’s reviews). I hope it is a step in the right direction but it just isn’t the same at all to the original Journey to India 70 calorie version. Not at all like I remember it and much more watery. I’m in full support of bringing back the original 70 calorie recipe – put it under any name, just bring it back!! 🥺

  4. My son brought home a jar of this to try for dinner tonight – can’t say I am looking forward to it after reading the reviews and comments – but will try it. I noticed the directions don’t seem to say how much meat to use with this – any guidance out there??

  5. I won’t be buying it anymore, the new sauce says may contain nuts. The previous one was one of the few sauces that didn’t have that listed. I kept searching the jars, wondering what the change was, then I looked online.
    Unfortunately, lost a customer

  6. The new Cook House brand is nothing compared to the Journey to India brand. It has no flavor and no kick. It is a huge disappointment. Aldi’s please bring back the original or you will lose sales

  7. I had the Tikka Masala made by Cook House today for lunch. I put chicken & peas in mine & served over white rice. It was really bland. I will not buy this sauce again. I was disappointed at how much it just tasted like tomato soup. And tomato soup is better. It didn’t even taste like tikka masala. It was boring and mild. I was not impressed.

  8. Why do they have to keep changing things for the worst? Aldi’s do you listen to your customer’s opinions? We overwhelmingly want you to bring back the Journey to India authentic variety! The 70 calorie version! Show us that you not only listen, but care.

  9. Thank you so much, I’ll get right on it!
