Crane Kettle Bell Set

Every new year, people the world over resolve to do things differently. Most of the time, those resolutions include improving health, whether it be through better eating, quitting vices that hurt health, or losing weight.

If you want to know just how big exercise is as New Year’s resolution, try visiting a gym in early January. Chances are, it’s packed with well-intentioned workout warriors hoping to shed the holiday pounds. For those who want to avoid the cost and hassle of a gym membership, another popular alternative is to bring the gym home, in the form of home workout equipment. Home equipment, though, can also be expensive, depending on what you get.

That’s why it’s really interesting how Aldi — the grocer that seems to have a product for every season — rolls out its own lineup of workout equipment just in time for the new year, from cardio to resistance training. If you’re looking for products in the resistance training category … well, here you go.

The Crane Kettle Bell Set is an ALDI Find, meaning you can only find it in stores for a short time. At the time of this post, the set retailed for $19.99. The set we tested included the following:

• Three kettle bells: one 5-pound bell, one 10-pound bell, and one 15-pound bell
• A manual
• A warranty card
• An exercise chart
• An instructional DVD

The set comes with a 3-year warranty, serviced by Asperia Nonfood, a German-based company that specializes in “sport, game, and leisure products.”

This is the best deal we could find on a set like this one. Amazon, for example, sells a similar 3-bell set through a third party, but it’s currently $30.13. Walmart, meanwhile, also sells a 3-bell set like this one (minus the DVD), but it’s currently $26.99, and that appears to be a sale price. Also of note: we did find kettle bells at our local Five Below store for $5 each, but they only had 5-pound and 10-pound versions, and we couldn’t find them on Five Below’s website. So if you’re looking for a set that includes a 15-pound bell, this appears to be the cheapest out there.

The Crane kettle bells are made of a plastic. The plastic is textured, which helps with grip. They feel balanced and don’t make any noise when I use them. I was able to do a variety of different exercises, including rowing, squats, and curls, and the bells felt comfortable in my hands.

As I mentioned earlier, the set comes with an exercise chart and an instructional DVD. The exercise chart contains a list of some possible exercises, although the internet is full of suggestions if you need them.

The DVD is basically an extension of the exercise chart: it works through the various exercises on the exercise chart, showing a live-action demonstration of each of exercise. There’s no audio narration, but there are explanations of the exercises at the bottom of the screen as the demonstrator performs each exercise. If you’re spatially challenged or want to make sure you have the right posture for the exercises on the chart, the DVD might be useful. Just be aware that it’s not a full exercise video or anything like that, so if you’re hoping for a cheerleader to get you through a 30-minute workout, this isn’t it.

The Verdict:

If you’re looking to add some resistance training to your home workout, the Crane Kettle Bell Set is a low-cost way to do it. The kettle bells seem to do the job, and the accompanying exercise chart and instructional DVD are useful for helping newcomers figure out what to do with them. A 3-year warranty adds a little peace of mind.
