Deutsche Küche Bavarian Sweet Mustard

EDITOR’S NOTE: View our roundup of many products in the Aldi Deutsche Kuche line here

I’ve been slowly working my way through some of the various German-inspired mustards Aldi sells for limited periods at different times throughout the year. Aldi sells a range of German products under its private Deutsche Küche label, including pickles, schnitzel, cream cakes, and a host of items such as peanut puffs (like Cheetos but with peanut flavor instead of cheese), spaetzle (noodles), and doppel keks (sandwich cookies). When talking with Aldi fans about their favorite German or German-inspired products in the Deutsche Küche line, the mustards almost always come up. So I figured I should give them a try.

The other week I tried the Deutsche Küche Whole Grain Mustard, which is excellent. This week, I picked up the Deutsche Küche Bavarian Sweet Mustard.

Deutsche Kuche Bavarian Sweet Mustard

Deutsche Küche Bavarian Sweet Mustard cost $1.69 for a 13-ounce jar at the time of publication.

Similar to the whole grain mustard in this product line, this sweet mustard is not actually a product of Germany. Instead, the label says it is “inspired by Germany.” While many items in the Deutsche Küche line are from Germany, you may want to carefully check the label to see if a product is “imported from Germany” or simply “inspired by Germany.”

This is an Aldi Find, which means it’s only in stores for a short time. Aldi does not offer online ordering for its specials, so after this sells out at your local store, it’s gone until next time.

Ingredients are: water, sugar, mustard seed, distilled vinegar, and caramel (color). It is gluten free.

There are 73 one-teaspoon servings in the jar, with one serving netting you 10 calories, no fat or sodium, 2 grams of total carbohydrates (1% DV), and 1 gram of added sugars (2% DV).

The mustard, uncapped. It has a very smooth consistency.

This Bavarian sweet mustard has a smooth consistency, and true to advertising it has a noticeable and distinct sweet flavor. It also has classic spicy or zesty notes beneath the sweetness, and it’s got more spice than regular grocery store mustard. I initially tried this mustard on an Aldi keto friendly bun with mayo, salami, and sliced Swiss cheese and found it to be good. Like other Aldi Deutsche Küche mustards, this would be good on any kind of sandwich, on burgers, or as a sauce topping for chicken, beef, or pork.

Each person’s preferences will be different, and while this mustard is fine, I like the Deutsche Küche Whole Grain Mustard with its bold flavors better. I’m not sure I personally like this enough to buy it in the future, but it’s all right and worth trying if you’re a mustard aficionado and especially if you like your mustard on the sweeter side.

The Verdict:

Deutsche Küche Bavarian Sweet Mustard is both sweet and mildly spicy with a smooth texture. Good on sandwiches, hot dogs, or burgers, or use as a sauce on beef, pork, or chicken.

The sweet mustard is great. Too bad it has not been in stock for several years.

  2. I too like this mustard and find a close taste at Amazon by searching by S.B.M. by producer “Lowenserf”

  3. I use the Sweet Bavarian mustard in my Deviled eggs! Everyone, ( even those who don’t like mustard) RAVE about them!
Mixture is – hard boiled egg yellows mashed, mayo, Bavarian sweet mustard, & sweet pickle relish (well drained). I don’t measure, I just do it to a good consistency. So it’s firm to pipe into egg white halves.
Then I sprinkle smoked paprika on top!
ALWAYS the 1st thing to disappear on the table! Enjoy!
Side note; the Bavarian mustard doesn’t last as long in the fridge, or cupboard as regular mustard because it has sugar in it. I tried to stock up, had to throw some away.
