Deutsche Küche German Cabbage Blend

Last Updated on May 9, 2022

It’s one of the most wonderful times of the year at Aldi: German food week. Aldi has origins in Germany, so it’s not surprising that the discount grocery store sells German or German-inspired food a couple of times a year. German food typically shows up at Aldi one week during the spring and one week during the fall.

German favorites at Aldi include schnitzel, specialty mustards, cream cakes, strudel, jaffa cakes, pickles, and more. My family is fond of a German potato blend with sliced potatoes, eggs, onions, and spices that Aldi sells during this time. As part of a mixed case alongside the potato blend, Aldi often sells a German Cabbage Blend that features different types of cabbage along with carrots, herbs, and olive oil. I picked up a bag of the cabbage blend recently to try.

Deutsche Küche German Cabbage Blend

Deutsche Küche German Cabbage Blend cost $2.69 for a 12-ounce package at the time of publication. While this is marketed under the Aldi Deutsche Küche German product line, it’s actually a product of France. The package states: “Savory cabbage and carrot blend seasoned with olive oil and herbs. Cook in a skillet, ready in 10 minutes.”

This is an Aldi Find, so it’s only in stores for a short time. Aldi does not offer online ordering for its specials if they aren’t in stock at your local store.

Ingredients include savoy cabbage, carrot, romanesco cabbage, shallot, water, crushed peeled tomatoes, rehydrated raisin, extra virgin olive oil, basil, white balsamic condiment, sunflower oil, potato starch, salt, garlic, chive, parsley, honey, lemon juice, chervil, thyme, cinnamon, spearmint, and white pepper.

The package has directions for heating in a skillet or in the microwave.

To heat on the stovetop, open the bag and pour the frozen contents into a warm skillet. Cook uncovered on medium heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Let stand 1-2 minutes before serving.

To microwave, open the bag and pour the frozen contents into a microwave-safe bowl. Place the bowl in the microwave oven and cook on high for 6-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Let stand for 1-2 minutes before serving.

This was quick and easy to heat on my stovetop. The veggies are all diced small, and there were several frozen chunks of sauce that gradually melted into the vegetable mixture as it heated in the skillet.

I served this cabbage blend alongside some pork schnitzel and cheesy egg spaetzle also from Aldi. The cabbage blend has a mild flavor and is not heavily seasoned, but that also makes this pretty healthy and low in sodium. I’m not typically a fan of raisins, but the raisins in this add an interesting texture and flavor. If you want a simple, healthy side dish to serve alongside other German goodies from Aldi, this is not a bad choice.

The Verdict:

The Deutsche Küche German Cabbage Blend features a mix of different types of cabbage, carrots, herbs, and seasonings. It has a mild flavor and is a good-for-you side dish that might help you feel better about indulging in other German treats from Aldi such as cake or strudel.
