Easy Home 5-Function Showerhead

Not long ago, I decided to replace one of the showerheads in my house. It didn’t have anything resembling a flow restrictor, so if you turned the knobs hard enough (this particular shower has separate knobs for hot and cold) you could probably put out a blast strong enough to skin a cat. Our solution came when, through a series of circumstances, we came into possession of a lightly used Delta 7-function showerhead.

Now, Delta products are pretty solid. Not only do they tend to perform well, but the company stands behind its products with some of the best customer service I’ve ever seen. Because of that, I tend to be something of a Delta loyalist, and I most certainly avoid generic faucets and showerheads.

But I also blog about Aldi, and Aldi sells various showerheads throughout the year, from basic models to ones that use water power to create a trippy LED light show. So when Aldi decided to sell one of its showerheads again, I resolved to take it for a spin. After all, if it went badly, I still have the trusty Delta that I could pull off the shelf.

The Easy Home 5-Function Showerhead is an ALDI Find (Special Buy), which means it’s only in stores for a limited time. Aldi tends to rotate various showerheads into its stores throughout the year, though, so if you miss out on one you’ll probably have a different Aldi showerhead popping up in a few months or so. This particular model runs just $6.99, while other Aldi showerheads can cost more. As 5-function showerheads go, this is really cheap.

This particular Easy Home showerhead is made by Orbit Home, which manufactures a wide variety of products. The showerhead is backed by a 1-year warranty.

This package comes with:

• The showerhead
• Thread seal tape (also known as plumber’s tape)
• An extra rubber washer
• An installation guide

In addition, the showerhead has the following five functions:

• Spray
• Aeration
• Massage
• Spray and massage
• Spray and aeration

The packaging also boasts anti-clog nozzles and a flow rate of 1.8 gallons per minute.

Installation of the showerhead is pretty much like installing any other showerhead, and, honestly, the hardest part can be removing the old showerhead. When I first installed my Delta, I had to remove a very old showerhead that was so locked onto the pipe that it took a couple of days of lubricating, soaking the thing in vinegar, and performing all kinds of other voodoo before it finally loosened up. (There are lots of guides online on how to do this, but you have to be careful not to damage your piping.)

Once you remove the old showerhead, the rest isn’t too hard. First, clean any old debris or plumber’s tape from the pipe threads, using either steel wool or an old toothbrush.

Next, apply the thread tape around the threads. Thread tape is important because it helps keep the pipe and showerhead from getting locked together. It’s helpful that Aldi supplies thread tape — not all showerheads come with it — and the tape is serviceable enough, although I found the plumber’s tape I got from my local hardware store to be a little easier to apply.

Finally, hand screw the showerhead onto the pipe. To finish the job, use a pipe wrench or pliers to tighten it until there are no leaks. To prevent the wrench from damaging the showerhead, wrap a washcloth around the showerhead first. And you will want to be careful — this showerhead has basically a thin coat of silvery finish on top of white plastic and it scratches and peels very easily.

So how does it work? It’s adequate, if not spectacular. Despite having a lower flow rate than some other showerheads, the flow is good enough. Some of the functions are better than others — an issue I’ve had with other multifunction showerheads — but the spray and aeration modes stand out as being interesting. Also, the switch to change functions requires a little more force than my other showerheads, although it won’t be overly difficult for most people.

The Verdict:

It’s a pure budget showerhead, cheap materials and all, but if you need one badly and you can’t spend a lot, this one might do the job. I generally find that you get what you pay for with showerheads, and in most cases I’d recommend spending more if you can on either a Delta or another respected model. Still, you won’t find too many that do this much for $7. The 1-year warranty is helpful, and the inclusion of plumber’s tape is a small but nice extra.
