When I think of Advent candles, I think of tall taper candles arranged in a group around a central large candle nestled in a pine wreath, and the religious tradition of lighting one candle during each week of Advent.

However, there’s a new type of Advent candle on the market. It’s a jar candle with a special label marked with the numbers 1-25, representing each day of Advent in December, plus Christmas Day itself. This type of candle is not the same as those used in religious services and is instead intended for home use. It seems to be pretty niche, as I’ve found only a few of them on sites such as Etsy or Amazon, but this year Aldi got in on the new trend.

The Huntington Home Advent Calendar Candle cost $4.99 during the 2020 holiday season.

This candle is an Aldi Find (Special Buy), which means it’s only available for a short time, and you can’t order online, so once your local store sells out, it’s gone.

It was available in three scents: Peppermint Bark, Spiced Currant, or Spice Cake. I purchased the Peppermint Bark candle, which has a good fresh scent.

The candles were made in Vietnam and are 18 oz. Like many of the candles Aldi sells, they are made of a soy blend. They come in a glass jar with a matte black lid. These candles have a single wick, not like the jar candles Aldi usually sells that have three wicks.

I was initially not sure how one of these candles is supposed to be burned. For example, did I need to burn the wax down to a certain level each day? The shipping/display box at the store had some guidance.

The box says: “Write on the label to count down the days till Christmas!”

A quick internet search indicates that you draw a small “x” over each date as you burn the candle, until you get to Christmas Day. You don’t have to burn the candle down to a certain level each day; you simply burn it as you wish.

I’m looking forward to burning this candle during Advent this year, and it will be a nice accompaniment to our chocolate, storybook, cheese, craft, and cat treat Advent calendars from Aldi.

The Verdict:

The Huntington Home Advent Calendar Candle is different from traditional Advent candle sets, and it’s a unique way to count down to Christmas Day.
