I have experience with a range of bedding at different price points, from $200 comforter sets from major home goods retailers to budget sets from Walmart or Aldi. When I got married 15 years ago, several friends went in together to purchase a luxurious $200 comforter from Bed Bath & Beyond for my husband and me. I only recently retired that much-used wedding comforter last summer when it finally frayed enough in certain places that it was time to replace it. I bought a $70 queen comforter set from Target that was not as good as the Bed Bath & Beyond set in terms of quality, but it’s adequate and looks nice.

I’ve also bought a decent amount of bedding from Aldi over the years, including a twin comforter, twin flannel sheets, queen-sized flannel sheets, and various regular sheet sets in twin and queen sizes. I didn’t care for one pricier Aldi sheet set, in which the fitted sheet didn’t stay put on my queen bed, but for the most part Aldi bedding is decent and economical.

One piece of bedding I’ve never purchased at Aldi is a large comforter for my queen bed. I’ve bought twin comforters that I like all right, but never anything larger. So I’ve been keeping an eye out during the past year or so, taking note when Aldi stocks comforters and waiting until a design caught my eye. This week, when I spotted comforters on the grocer’s shelves, I picked up a full/queen complete bedding set in a design called Watercolor.

While this set is gorgeous, unfortunately, this “full/queen” bedding set actually only fits on full-sized mattresses and not queen-sized mattresses. I could not put the fitted sheet on my queen mattress. More on that in a bit.

The Huntington Home Complete Bed Set cost $29.99 at the time of publication. It was available in either twin/twin XL or full/queen sizes. The full/queen set contains not just a comforter; it also includes a complete sheet set with flat sheet, fitted sheet, and four pillowcases, plus two shams. Considering how much you’re getting in this set, it’s competitively priced based on similar sets on the market.

This set is an Aldi Find, which means it’s only in stores for a short time. Aldi does not offer online ordering for its specials after they sell out at your local store, so once they’re gone they’re gone.

Here’s more info on the bed sets:

The pretty drawstring “laundry bag” the bedding set comes in. It’s not huge, but it would work for one person. It might also be good for tucking into luggage as a way to store dirty laundry when traveling.

The package for the full/queen set lists specific measurements for each piece.

• Comforter: 76 inches by 90 inches
• Shams: 20 inches by 26 inches
• Flat sheet: 81 inches by 96 inches
• Fitted sheet: 54 inches by 75 inches
• Pillowcases: 20 inches by 30 inches

This set should be machine washed separately in cold water, on the gentle cycle. Use only non-chlorine bleach when needed. Tumble dry on low heat. Do not iron.

A queen bed fail

I’ve purchased enough Aldi bedding to know that I wanted to see how this set fit on my bed before I washed it, so I could return it if I had problems. Specifically, I wanted to check how well the fitted sheet fit, and I wanted to make sure the comforter offered enough coverage on my queen bed. A common problem with Aldi fitted sheets — whether they’re queen-sized or twin-sized — is that many of them tend to fit more on the loose side, and the mattresses in my house are of a pretty average thickness.

The fitted sheet in this set was definitely not too loose. I had quite the opposite problem: the fitted sheet was too small to fit on my queen mattress. (And I don’t have an extra-thick mattress, so that wasn’t the problem.)

This was as far as I could pull the fitted sheet over the fourth corner of my queen mattress.

I couldn’t pull it over the final corner. Not even close.

Fail.

Okay, so I thought maybe I could still use the comforter, and $29.99 is still a good deal even if you’re just using the comforter and pillowcases and not the sheets.

The comforter turned out to also be on the skimpy side for a queen bed, but not in such a disastrous way as the fitted sheet. A common issue with budget comforters is that they may short you on side coverage. I noticed that when I transitioned from a pricey Bed Bath & Beyond bedspread to a cheaper Target bedspread this past year, although the Target bedspread still provides enough coverage; it’s just not quite a generous as the more expensive blanket. This Aldi comforter takes skimpy side coverage to a new level all together.

If I arranged the comforter so it hung just to the bottom of the mattress on one side of the bed, it would not fully cover the mattress on the other side.

At this point, I was about to tackle the probably impossible and inevitably frustrating task of stuffing the entire bedding set back into the fabric bag (which doubles as a laundry bag!) that it came home from the store in, so I could return it to Aldi.

But then I realized I could try using the set on the full-sized bed in my spare bedroom. I hauled the whole set down to the basement, stripped the guest bed of the thrift store quilt and sheets I’d been using on it, and voila. The Aldi bedding set fit like a charm — the fitted sheet is perhaps slightly loose on the full bed, but it fits better than some other Aldi fitted sheets I own. The set adds a nice update to the room, taking it from quaint country quilt-ish to stylish and modern.

I like the fact that this set has four pillowcases because a lot of my people in my family like to sleep with two pillows. Two pillowcases in this set are the same pattern as the comforter, while the other two are gray/blue and white striped and uniquely complement the comforter pattern. I’m not currently using the pillow shams in this set because I don’t have that many pillows, especially in the spare bedroom. If you’re wondering, though, the pillow shams have the same pattern as the comforter.

The side coverage still isn’t as generous as more pricey comforters, but it works on the full-sized bed. I’m glad I have a bed that this set fits on so I don’t have to attempt stuffing it all back into its bag to return it. Still, it’s unfortunate that Aldi advertising failed here.

It took some trial and error to learn that this bedding set, which is labeled as a full/queen set, is really only just a full-sized set. When I thought about it some more, it makes sense that fitted sheets especially would not easily transition between both a full-sized mattress and a queen-sized mattress. It sounds like a recipe for poor-fitting sheets all around.

What’s more, I did some Googling to read about standard measurements for sheets. The dimensions listed on the Aldi package for the fitted sheet in this set are 54 inches by 75 inches. That’s almost identical to the 53 inches by 75 inches fitted sheet measurements recommended here for a full bed. In contrast, that same site recommends a queen fitted sheet that measures 60 inches by 80 inches. No wonder the Aldi sheet wouldn’t fit on my queen bed. It’s a substantial size difference.

With all of that said, I have yet to wash and actually use these sheets. I’ll update this post later with any new developments.

UPDATE (2/23/2023) — I ended up replacing the comforter on the full-sized bed in my guest bedroom after overnight guests said it wasn’t big enough to adequately cover two people at once. I’ve slept in the guest bed with this bedding at different times and it’s fine for one person. However, the comforter is a little skimpy on the side coverage even on a full bed, so I can see how it wouldn’t work well if two people are in the bed. The sheets are fine. It looks like the comforter may be relegated to being used as an oversized comforter on a twin bed, though.

The Verdict:

This particular Huntington Home Complete Bed Set comes in several sizes, and I bought the one that says it’s designed to fit full and queen beds. I discovered that this set actually only fits on full beds and not queens. I couldn’t put the fitted sheet on my queen mattress, and the comforter offers extremely skimpy coverage on a queen bed. The comforter doesn’t even offer good coverage on a full bed if two people are using the bed, and we’re now only using it as an extra-large comforter for a twin bed. It’s a lovely-looking set, but be aware that the sizing is not as advertised.
