Kirkwood Fully Cooked Honey BBQ Flavored Chicken Wings

In our quest to try all of the different types of breaded chicken at Aldi — “red bag” chicken, “green bag” chicken, chicken cordon bleu, etc. — I recently came across a new favorite when I discovered some breaded chicken wings with a sweet honey barbecue sauce.

I often make chicken wings using a homemade mix of seasonings. The skins bake up crisp in the oven, and my family adds their own choice of sauce at the table. Because we like homemade chicken wings so much, I decided to try these fully cooked Aldi chicken wings.

Kirkwood Fully Cooked Honey BBQ Flavored Chicken Wings

Kirkwood Fully Cooked Honey BBQ Flavored Chicken Wings cost $6.75 for a 28-ounce bag at the time of publication.

The chicken wings are a Regular Buy, which means Aldi sells them all year.

These are sold frozen, and the bag describes these as “breaded and glazed chicken wing sections.” The package also states the chickens were raised with “no antibiotics ever!” on an “all vegetarian diet.” Chickens are omnivores, so a vegetarian diet is not really natural or especially healthy, but it’s a common claim on egg and poultry packaging these days.

These do have a few processed ingredients, including natural flavor, vague “spices,” soy lecithin, and xanthan gum. Besides being sweetened with sugar and honey, the wings also contain a small amount (2% or less) of the artificial sweetener sucralose (commonly known as Splenda). I generally avoid buying a lot of products with artificial sweeteners, but the amount in these chicken wings looks to be pretty small, and no one in my family could tell these have sucralose when we ate them.

If you’re watching out for allergens, these contain soy and wheat.

The bag contains about seven servings. One serving (a 3-ounce edible portion, or 84 grams) has 150 calories, 8 grams of total fat (10% DV), 2 grams of saturated fat (10% DV), 60 mg of cholesterol (20% DV), 580 mg of sodium (25% DV), 9 grams of total carbohydrates (3% DV), 1 gram of dietary fiber (4% DV), 5 grams of total sugars, 4 grams of added sugars (8% DV), and 10 grams of protein (20% DV).

These wings can be heated in a conventional oven (the preferred method) or in a microwave.

To heat in the oven, preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the wings on a foil-lined pan and lightly spray with cooking spray. (I sprayed the foil-lined pan first, then placed the wings.) Cook for 27-32 minutes or until the internal temperature of the wings reaches at least 165 degrees. Turn the wings over after 15 minutes of baking. Let stand outside of the oven for 3 minutes before serving.

To microwave, place 6-8 frozen wings on a microwave-safe plate. Place in the microwave on high for 4-5 minutes. Let wings stand for 2-3 minutes before serving. Refrigerate leftovers immediately.

I baked our chicken wings in the oven for about 30 minutes. Some of the breading slid off when I used tongs at the 15-minute mark to flip the wings, so be careful when turning them.

The chicken wings, ready to eat.

These were a hit in my house. The chicken itself is tender, with plenty of breading, and everyone liked the sweet, zesty flavor of the sauce so much that even family members who don’t eat much meat loved these. The wings didn’t bake up quite as crisp as I might like them to, probably because they come with the sauce already added on top of the breading. That didn’t stop my family from eating them all, though. I’ll buy these again at some point, and I might try putting them in the air fryer next time.

The Verdict:

Kirkwood Fully Cooked Honey BBQ Flavored Chicken Wings are ready to pop in the oven. They have a flavorful breading and sweet barbecue sauce, and they didn’t last long on our dinner table. These are great on their own as the main part of a meal, or you can serve them as appetizers or finger food for a party.

I tried these and found them so wet and soggy upon eating them it was almost disgusting. Perhaps if they were cooked in an air dryer they might firm up enough to appeal. They are obviously trying for the BBQ-coated wings they sell at KFC, but these came nowhere near them.

    • I just made these in my air fryer and they were disgusting. Not much meat on these wings, mostly breading. Very disappointed.

      • Nice to know it was not just me.

So many people adore the bagged breaded coated chicken parts ALDI offers. I have not found one I can stomach yet.

      • I have never had any chicken as fatty as these were. I had several servings and they were the same… could not even get them crisp in the air fryer. Will gladly throw the rest of the bag out.

  2. Thank you for your review! I also appreciate your mention of the allergens. I couldn’t find this information on the Aldi site.

  3. These were the worst chicken wings I’ve ever eaten. I literally threw the entire batch in the garbage just before writing this. This sauce is ok, but the wings themselves are mushy and fatty. The fat goes down to the bone in some places, with only little bits of meat in each wing. Truly disgusting.

  4. ive eaten and enjoid kirkwood wings for a while.until the LAST bag i just bought.not only have the raised prices, they,ve made them inedible.after 1.5 of these over salted pos i could,nt stand to even try again.goodby to one of my best snack wings and fries.goodby kirkwood

  5. I have read most of the reviews and am glad to see that I was not alone in my thoughts about these wings. I agree with the comments stating that these were some of the worst wings I’ve ever had. They were fatty, wet, soggy and lacked any substantial chicken meat. Not worth eating. These reviews date back a couple years and say the same things but NOTHING has changed. Kirkwood should be ashamed to be selling these to customers. Aldi should cut their ties with a company that doesn’t care about the customer because their association is leaving people with a bad taste in their mouth. Too many other grocery stores to shop from nowadays.
