liveGfree Gluten Free White Wide Pan Bread

I recently hosted a small lunch get together with friends who have a teenager who eats a gluten free diet. I served a spread of various lunchmeats, homemade chicken salad, sliced cheese, and different sandwich toppings and condiments. Included in that selection was some whole grain white bread from Aldi and some Aldi crescents. Not wanting to forget our young guest who eats gluten free, I picked up some gluten free white bread from Aldi.

Aldi is a good grocery store if you’re looking for gluten free products. They carry everything from gluten free imitation Red Lobster cheddar biscuits to gluten free cornbread mix to gluten free chicken nuggets and General Tso’s chicken. During the holidays, they also sell gluten free stuffing mix and gluten free French fried onions for a limited time.

I had yet to try any of the fresh gluten free bread from Aldi until my recent lunch gathering.

liveGfree Gluten Free White Wide Pan Bread cost $5.79 for a 20-ounce loaf at the time of publication. This is also available in a whole wheat variety, but I haven’t yet tried that. With eight 2-slice servings per package, that comes out to about 36 cents per slice or about 72 cents per 2-slice serving.

The bread is kosher, nonGMO, and certified gluten free. This is a Regular Buy, which means you should be able to find it at Aldi any time of year.

Ingredients include water, gluten free flour blend (modified tapioca starch, potato starch, brown rice flour), sunflower oil, dextrose, cane sugar, psyllium husk, yeast, modified cellulose, pea fiber, salt, rice bran, cultured cane sugar, vinegar, and cellulose gum.

Gluten free bread ready for sandwich toppings.

My gluten free friend loves this bread and was excited to make a sandwich with it when I included it in my lunchmeat spread. The slices are a little on the thin side, but they’re plenty big enough to make a good-sized sandwich.

The texture is naturally going to be a bit different from traditional bread made with wheat flour. It has a spongier consistency and almost melts in the mouth. It’s not the most flavorful bread, but it’s perfectly serviceable if you need something to hold sandwich fillings.

I stuck this bread loaf in the freezer after a few days, upon the recommendation of my friend who regularly eats this. They said it doesn’t tend to last long at room temperature and can mold quickly, so they usually store it in the freezer and take out slices as needed, thawing them in the toaster. That’s potentially a good idea anyway if not everyone in your household eats gluten free, since it might take a while to finish a loaf.

The Verdict:

liveGfree Gluten Free White Wide Pan Bread is made with modified tapioca starch, potato starch, and brown rice flour. If you really want to eat bread but can’t eat gluten, it’s a good option that is highly approved by my friends who eat gluten free diets.

  1. I have celiac. We started shopping at ALDIs because of a good selection of gluten free products. ALDI no longer carries a good selection of gf products therefore it is no longer worthwhile for us to shop there.
