L’Oven Fresh Keto Friendly Buns

Last Updated on April 21, 2021

It’s been not quite two years since Aldi introduced a keto bread loaf that became an internet sensation, prompting fans to clear shelves and search multiple stores for the mythical baked good. The bread was initially intended to be a limited-time special, but demand was so high Aldi eventually made it a Regular Buy available year round.

Sometime between then and now, Aldi quietly introduced another keto-friendly baked item: buns that can be used for sandwiches or burgers.

L'Oven Fresh Keto Friendly Buns

L’Oven Fresh Keto Friendly Buns cost $3.49 at the time of publication for a 16-ounce package containing eight buns (about 44 cents per serving).

According to Aldi, these are a Seasonal item, which means they will be in stores longer than an Aldi Find, but they won’t be available all year. Our guess is they’ll stick around for the summer cookout months, but if you want to enjoy them beyond that, you might want to stash a few packages in your home freezer.

These are vegan and kosher, and they advertise just 2 grams of net carbs, a whopping 19 grams of dietary fiber, and 8 grams of protein per serving for “zero guilt.” As is the case with the Aldi keto bread loaf mentioned above, most of the carbohydrates in these keto friendly buns are from fiber, and fiber is a type of carbohydrate the body generally does not absorb, so idea is that these carbs will simply pass through the body.

Here’s a look at how the keto math works: the buns have 21 grams of total carbohydrates and 19 grams of dietary fiber. Subtract the dietary fiber from the total carbs, and that equals 2 grams of net carbs per serving.

Some people might argue whether a bread product can be truly keto friendly, and we discuss that more over here. Nevertheless, this type of bread can be appealing to many people looking to reduce their carb intake.

Ingredients are: water, modified wheat starch, wheat gluten, oat fiber, wheat protein isolate, yeast, soybean oil, inulin, vinegar, salt, and preservatives (sorbic acid and calcium propionate).

If you’re avoiding allergens, these buns have wheat, and they may contain milk. The package also states they contain bioengineered food ingredients.

If you’re interested in all the nutrition information besides just the carb count, one package contains eight buns that are 57 grams each, with one serving netting you 60 calories, 2 grams of total fat (3% DV), no cholesterol, 220 mg of sodium (10% DV), 21 grams of total carbohydrates (8% DV), 19 grams of dietary fiber (68% DV), no sugars, and 8 grams of protein.

So how do these buns compared to regular buns? And how do they taste?

The first thing you’ll notice is that they are slightly smaller than traditional store-bought hamburger buns.

I initially tried one for lunch with salami, Swiss cheese, mayo, and Deutsche Kuche Bavarian Sweet Mustard all from Aldi.

My keto bun sandwich.

The buns are not the most flavorful I’ve tasted, but I kind of had that expectation going into it. After all, I’ve tried the Aldi keto bread loaves and they all taste a bit like these buns — a bit on the bland side and like they contain a lot of fiber. If you want flavorful buns and don’t care about calories or carbs, then you’ll want something more like Aldi’s brioche buns. The keto friendly buns’ consistency is less fluffy and airy compared to traditional buns, but they’re still plenty soft. They make a good neutral base for whatever burger or sandwich you’re building, and if I didn’t know they were keto friendly, I probably wouldn’t be able to tell.

I don’t go out of my way to buy keto baked goods all the time, but I wouldn’t be opposed to buying these again, especially for making quick lunchmeat or egg/tuna salad sandwiches for lunch time.

The Verdict:

L’Oven Fresh Keto Friendly Buns are slightly smaller than traditional hamburger buns and, as is the case with many keto friendly baked goods, they aren’t the most flavorful. However, if you want a base for a sandwich or burger without the major carbohydrate load that comes with regular bread or buns, these are worth trying.

My husband and I tried the new Keto buns recently. I toasted them first as it helps with the texture and flavor a lot. They were very nice with our cheeseburgers that were topped with grilled onions and condiments. Much nicer than using the Keto bread slices as buns.

  2. I LOVE these Keto buns. I’ve tried several brands and have spent a load of money on other brands – these by far, are the best low carb bread/bun out there!! Toasting them also gives it more texture – if that’s what you’re looking for.

  3. The buns look tasty but modified wheat starch is not keto.

  4. Any idea if a hotdog bun is in the works?

    • We don’t know about that. We’d suggest asking Aldi: https://www.aldireviewer.com/contact-aldi/

      • I have BEGGED them to not only make hot dog buns, but to KEEP the dinner rolls and hamburger buns as PERMANENT items. I’ve also asked them to use this process to make waffles, pancakes, and other “bread-type” items. I just found out – through your site – that they are NOW making bagels! I CAN’T WAIT!!!! THANK YOU for having this site to keep us informed!!!!!

        • Yes!!! Yes!!! Yes!!!!

        • I am lucky to find the bread, Hamburger buns normally not in stock and have never seen the hot dog rolls. only one time for dinner rolls. Is their a way to order on line. Also when do they stop the Hamburger rolls, last year I found and purchased 10 packs for the freezer. I am a regular for the store at least once a week. Towson MD

  5. I was very pleased to be able to have a sandwich or burger. Will definitely buy them again!

Wish ALDI would come out with gluten-free bread. That would be very helpful to many of us, but I am glad they have developed Keto Friendly breads. That doesn’t help me, but glad for customers who follow Keto.

  7. These buns are very good but I feel like Aldi’s is playing games with the supply (like they did with the Keto bread when it first came out). Not that Aldi’s cares but I am too busy to make multiple trips just to be told they are gone. Guess I’ll stick to Whole Foods. Their low carb products are more expensive but my time is worth it.

  8. I’m loving Aldi’s Keto bread products! I’ve tried so many over the years, these are by far THE BEST! I’m in CA and the weather here permits BBQing all year, I hate it when the product disappears. Bread products don’t freeze well, anyone have a successful method? i’D LOVE TO HEAR IT.

    • Trere bread comes in the store frozen It does freeze well. I’m in CA and was disappointed when I went in the other day and they didn’t have any or a place for them if they were out of stock. I asked the cashier about them and she just said she has not seen any. She should have told me they were seasonal.

  9. I contacted Aldi late last year begging for keto hot dog and hamburger buns similar to their keto breads. I now stock up every few weeks and freeze them. The buns really deliver, as do the breads. Knowing they’re a “seasonal” I’ll probably stash a bunch. Now we just need a hot dog bun!!! I’m a type 1 diabetic btw so these are great low-carb substitutes, better and cheaper than anything else you can find or make.

  10. I can’t find the Lovin Fresh Keto Buns in Audi’s anymore. They are my favorite why are they not being stocked any longer??? Is there anyway to order them??? Thank you!

  11. Am I the only one who doesn’t like the dry keto hamburger buns?
    I do like the Bagels

  12. I have had a VERY difficult time sticking to Keto because of a lifelong addiction to bread. Never tried the breads, but Decided to give the buns a try and the dinner rolls a try. THEY ARE LIFE SAVERS! I am FINALLY able to eat a “normal” cheeseburger! I am FINALLY able to have a roll with dinner! I am VERY frugal, but these are such a game-changer for me, I don;t even care that they are more expensive than “regular” rolls! Based on how good they are, I;m going to try the keto breads as well. And I just emailed Aldi and BEGGED them to make these a year-round item AND add hot dog buns to the mix.

  13. My husband and I tried the buns. Sorry but, YUK! I guess I come from an era when breads (and food) were real – I cannot get passed the texture let alone the fake taste – and I made garlic toast out of it and the “off” taste and funky texture was still there. So, no thanks – I’ll splurge now and then for the real deal!

  14. Just OK. Biggest complaint is the way they were sliced. The bottom was maybe a quarter the thickness of the top. totally useless as a bun. I would rather they were not sliced, Will not buy them again.

  15. Why are they stopping, I buy every week, now I read this but to late, non available this week. Our store Lutherville MD has no buns or bread. Need them to restock.

  16. Unfortunately they are now gone. I would love to see it as a permanent item. This L’oven Fresh keto bun is one of the best ever. Only comparable keto bun to it is Lewis Bakery keto bun. I hope Aldi reconsider making it permanent item though.

  17. I’ve been searching 2 Aldi’s every week hoping to find these. Now I know why I haven’t found any can stop looking.
The L’oven fresh buns have been my favourite of those that I’ve tried.
If I’d known they were seasonal, I would have froze some.
I took a package to a get together and recently several of my GF’s have asked me where they can buy them.
We BBQ year round and burgers are a staple.
Maybe they will put out a hot dog bun too!
