Mama Cozzi’s Chicken Flatbread Southwest Style with BBQ Sauce

One of my family’s favorite routines is to settle in at home on a Friday night, when we can take a deep breath and relax after a busy week, and enjoy some pizza and a movie. Sometimes we make homemade pizza with crust made from Aldi yeast packets. Other times we might pop a frozen pan pizza or artisan crust pizza into the oven. Still, some of our favorite pizzas from Aldi are their take and bakes.

For a small inventory store, Aldi sells a pretty wide range of take and bake pizzas with toppings to suit every taste. They sell sausage and pepperoni, five cheese, uncured pepperoni cauliflower crust, supreme, and mega meat. Aldi even sells accompaniments such as cheesy breadsticks.

In addition, next to the take and bake pizzas in the Aldi deli section are a couple of flatbreads with various toppings. Aldi sells and pepperoni and mozzarella flatbread, and they also sell a southwest style chicken flatbread with barbecue sauce if you prefer something with a bit of kick. Here, we’re looking at the chicken flatbread.

Mama Cozzi’s Chicken Flatbread Southwest Style with BBQ Sauce cost $5.29 for a 12.5-ounce package at the time of publication. This features “mozzarella & cheddar cheeses, diced chicken breast, tomatoes, red onions & jalapeno peppers with BBQ sauce on a flatbread crust.” It’s made with 100% real cheese.

This is a Regular Buy or core range product, which means you should be able to find it at Aldi any time of year.

If you’re watching out for allergens, this contains wheat, milk, and soy.

This is basically a pizza, so it’s not great for you, and the barbecue sauce adds a fair amount of sugar. One flatbread has three servings, and one serving (118 grams) will net you 300 calories, 12 grams of total fat (15% DV), 4.5 grams of saturated fat (23% DV), 450 mg of sodium (20% DV), 37 grams of total carbohydrates (13% DV), 11 grams of total sugars, 9 grams of added sugars (18% DV), and 13 grams of protein.

The package has directions for baking this flatbread in a conventional oven. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Remove the flatbread from the packaging and place the thawed flatbread on the center oven rack. (I used a baking sheet.) Do not bake the flatbread on the cardboard tray it came packaged with. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the cheese in the center is melted and the crust is golden.

This was easy to bake in my oven and went well with a side salad. This flatbread has a medium spice level that was too much for some of the kids in my house who tried it. The spiciness probably comes from the jalapenos (which were not easily visible on the pizza), but it might also be in the barbecue sauce. My husband and I liked it. It has a decent amount of diced chicken and tomatoes, and the sauce is flavorful. It was perhaps a little light on the cheese, but it had so many other toppings that we didn’t really mind.

I’d buy this again the next time I want to shake up a traditional pizza night. Just like Aldi take and bake pizzas, these flatbreads freeze well so I can stash some in the freezer in advance of a busy night, too.

The Verdict:

Mama Cozzi’s Chicken Flatbread Southwest Style with BBQ Sauce has a medium amount of spiciness and features mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, diced chicken, tomatoes, red onions, jalapenos, and barbecue sauce on a flatbread crust. If you want something different than a regular take and bake pizza, this is worth a try.
