Millville Chewy Granola Bars

Granola bars are an all-purpose food. They can be used as a quick breakfast, a snack, or a source of energy during a long activity, like a day hike.

Aldi sells a selection of granola bars, including variety packs for those who want a little bit of everything. Our test subject was this basic model:

Millville Chewy Granola Bars

The pack of Millville Chewy Granola Bars we picked up — the 90-calorie Chocolate Chunk — came 10 to a box and retailed for $1.49, or just under 15 cents a bar. We found a very similar 90-calorie Great Value Chocolate Chunk granola bar from Walmart, which ran $3.98 for a 24-pack, or about 16.5 cents for a same-sized bar. That makes the Millville box a better deal all-around, even buying the Walmart house brand in bulk.

The Millville bars are made from whole grain rolled oats and also include whole grain brown rice flour, sugar, whole wheat flakes, and a host of other ingredients. High fructose corn syrup is not among the ingredients. Be aware that wheat, milk, soy, and coconut are.

As advertised, each 8.4-ounce (24g) granola bar has 90 calories. Each bar also contains 1.5 grams of fat, 50 mg of sodium, and 19 grams of carbohydrates, including a single gram of dietary fiber and 7 grams of sugar. Other than a small amount of calcium and a smaller amount of iron, there aren’t a lot of vitamins or minerals in the bars.

In our experience, they taste mostly like other granola bars we’ve had from other places: as in, perfectly decent. They’re not large, so they make for a good snack or pick-me-up, but you can also eat more than one if you need to. Also, if you’re in the market to get something slightly more filling, we find that granola bars containing nuts can help hit the spot.

The Verdict:

Millville Chewy Granola Bars do exactly what we expect them to do, and for a price that is very competitive. Recommended.
