Moser Roth 24 Days of Christmas Nutcracker Advent Calendar

I’ve been buying Advent calendars from Aldi for years. I typically stick with the least expensive chocolate calendar, and my family is perfectly happy with that. This year, we’re looking for more ways to have fun at home. Sometimes that fun can be found in something as simple as trying the pricier chocolate calendars at Aldi, and that comes with the added benefit of satiating everyone’s sweet tooth.

The Moser-Roth 24 Days of Christmas Nutcracker Advent Calendar cost $8.99 during the 2021 holiday season.

The cheapest chocolate Advent calendar Aldi sells is the Choceur Advent Calendar with 24 Milk Chocolate Figures, and in 2021 there is a pricier Moser Roth Luxury Chocolate Advent Calendar that sells for $14.99.

Moser-Roth is Aldi’s exclusive premium chocolate brand, and it’s a step up from Aldi’s Choceur chocolate brand. Moser Roth is a subsidiary of Storck, a German candy company that also produces Knoppers, Werther’s Original, and Riesen.

Like all of the Advent calendars at Aldi, this is an Aldi Find (Special Buy), which means it’s only in stores for a short time, and Aldi does not sell items like this online, so one it sells out at your local store, it’s gone until next year.

This calendar was made in Germany and uses UTZ certified cocoa, which supports “socially responsible and environmentally friendly cocoa farming.”

Like other Aldi chocolate calendars, this consists of a thin box with 24 perforated doors that open to reveal a chocolate piece, one for each day of Advent. This calendar has a Nutcracker theme, with an image of a different nutcracker on each door.

What makes this calendar different from other Aldi chocolate calendars is the fact that it contains multiple flavors and varieties of chocolates and truffles. Some flavors are unique, including apple or orange mousse.

The chocolates and truffles include:

• Crème Brûlée Truffle. This has a white chocolate outer shell with a beige-colored filling. Its overall flavor is extremely sweet.
• Bourbon Vanilla Truffle. This is a fairly large piece of candy with a milk chocolate shell and a smooth creamy filling with hints of vanilla.
• Orange Mousse Caramel Truffle. I was skeptical about this one, but it was actually quite good with a light, mild, refreshing orange-flavored filling inside a dark chocolate shell. It reminded me, not surprisingly, of a chocolate orange.
• Mousse with Nougat Chocolate. This has a dark chocolate shell and an inner chocolate filling that is not so much like the fluffy nougat I’m accustomed to but more like a smooth almost caramel-textured chocolate cream. Overall, this is good if you like a balance between bittersweet and sweet chocolate.
• Cappuccino Truffle. This is very good and has a milk chocolate shell with a smooth and soft chocolatey cappuccino-flavored filling. I don’t think it has a strong cappuccino flavor, though. The dominant flavor for me is chocolate.
• Mousse au Chocolat Truffle. This is a small ball of milk chocolate coated with slightly crunchy grains of sugar and filled with smooth and creamy chocolate.
• Baked Apple Truffle. I was curious about this one, and unsure about a combination of apples and chocolate, but it was all right. This has a white chocolate shell with a smooth apple-flavored filling with hints of caramel, almost like a caramel apple.
• Mascarpone Truffle. This has a dark chocolate shell with a white mascarpone filling. It has a classic bittersweet chocolate flavor with a mild-flavored filling.
• Latte Macchiato Truffle. This white chocolate truffle has a mild coffee flavor. In fact, the coffee flavor is so mild that my kids — who don’t care for anything coffee-flavored — actually liked this one.

Because of the great variety of flavors, the ingredients list for this calendar is fairly long, with some of the first ingredients including sugar, cocoa butter, chocolate liquor, dry whole milk, condensed milk, sorbitol, butter, and whey.

Some of the more unique ingredients farther down the list include mascarpone cheese powder, apple puree and apple juice concentrate, grounded coffee, instant coffee, black currant concentrate, and orange juice concentrate.

If you’re looking out for allergens, these truffles contain milk, soy, wheat, and tree nuts (almonds and hazelnuts). They may also contain traces of egg, peanuts, and other tree nuts (walnuts, coconut, pistachios, and macadamia nuts).

The nutrition panel says this calendar has about 12 two-piece servings, but if you do it right, you should only be eating one chocolate or truffle a day. Nevertheless, a two-piece serving (25 grams) has 130 calories, 7 grams of total fat (9% DV), 4.5 grams of saturated fat (23% DV), 14 grams of total carbohydrates (5% DV), and 12 grams of added sugars (25% DV).

The Verdict:

The Moser-Roth 24 Days of Christmas Nutcracker Advent Calendar has a large selection of unique candies, and they’re all pretty good. If you’re a truffle fan, this is worth trying.
