Moser-Roth Twelve Days of Christmas Advent Calendar with Chocolate Truffles

Last Updated on December 1, 2021

Each holiday season, Aldi sells a host of Advent calendars for every taste and hobby, from cheese to wine to beer, and even pet treats, candles, chocolates, crafts, and coffee.

Advent calendars run from December 1st to December 24th, or sometimes December 25, which means your treats run out by Christmas Day at the latest. If you’re not quite ready to give up the fun, Aldi also sells a few Twelve Days of Christmas calendars to prolong the celebration.

Most people are familiar with the Twelve Days of Christmas through the popular song with the same title. The Twelve Days of Christmas, also known as Twelvetide, celebrate the nativity or birth of Jesus and run from December 25th to January 5th. In the United States, Christians who celebrate the liturgical seasons — Episcopalians, Lutherans, Orthodox Christians, Roman Catholics, etc. — are more likely to celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas.

Aldi shoppers who want to celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas can do so with a chocolate truffle calendar or with an O’Donnells Twelve Days of Irish Country Cream calendar. We picked up the chocolate truffle calendar.

The Moser-Roth Twelve Days of Christmas with Chocolate Truffles cost $4.99 during the 2020 holiday season. This is an Aldi Find (Special Buy), which means it is only in stores for a short time, so when it sells out at your local store, you’ll have to wait until next year to score another one.

Moser-Roth is Aldi’s exclusive premium brand of chocolate, and it’s a step up from Aldi’s Choceur chocolate brand. Moser Roth is a subsidiary of Storck, which is a German candy company that also produces Knoppers, Werther’s Original, and Riesen.

This product was made in Germany with Fairtrade cocoa.

It consists of a thin flat box with 12 perforated cardboard doors, and behind each door is a chocolate truffle. Each door is numbered and features illustrations of items highlighted in the popular song (a partridge in a pear tree, two turtle doves, three French hens, four calling birds, etc.).

For fun, the full lyrics to the song The Twelve Days of Christmas are printed on the back of the calendar.

There are six different kinds of truffles:

  • Mousse with Nougat — This has a chocolate shell with a smooth and creamy chocolate center.
  • Chocolat Mousse — This has a white chocolate shell with a smooth milk chocolatey filling.
  • Hazelnut — This features a milk chocolate shell with a smooth hazelnut-flavored filling. This one can be slightly messy to eat because when you bite into it the little chocolate sprinkles on top tend to go flying. Overall a good chocolate, especially if you like hazelnut candies such as Ferrero Rocher.
  • Sea Salt Caramel — This has a dark chocolate shell with white chocolate sprinkles on top. From looking at the picture on the back of the box, I thought the sprinkles were salt, but they’re definitely white chocolate, and that was a little disappointing but not a deal breaker. This has a slightly gooey caramel filling with a hint of saltiness.
  • Snickerdoodle (Flavored) — This has a white chocolate shell with a creamy filling that really tastes like a snickerdoodle cookie, complete with a touch of crunchy sugar crystals reminiscent of a snickerdoodle’s cinnamon and sugar coating.
  • Toffee — This features a milk chocolate shell sprinkled with toffee bits, with a soft and smooth toffee-flavored filling. I didn’t think the toffee flavor was very strong, but it’s still a good truffle.

Ingredients for all of these truffles include but are not limited to: sugar, cocoa butter, chocolate liquor, dry whole milk, and condensed milk.

If you’re watching out for allergens, these contain milk, soy, wheat, and tree nuts (hazelnuts). They may also contain traces of egg, peanuts, and other tree nuts (almonds, walnuts, coconut, pistachios, and macadamia nuts).

The nutrition panel says there are six 2-piece servings per container. However, if you do it right and eat only one truffle per day, then it’s really a 1-piece serving. If you do eat two pieces at once, that will net you 130 calories, 8 grams of total fat (10% DV), 5 grams of saturated fat (25% DV), 14 grams of total carbohydrates (5% DV), and 12 grams of added sugars (23% DV).

The Verdict:

The Moser-Roth Twelve Days of Christmas with Chocolate Truffles calendar celebrates Christmas Day and beyond. It features a variety of chocolates, including toffee-flavored, snickerdoodle-flavored, mousse, nougat, hazelnut, and sea salt with caramel. It’s a fun and delicious way to extend the holiday Advent calendar season.
