There’s an old meme that sometimes makes its way around social media, joking that a person went to Aldi for a loaf of bread but instead came home with a two-man tent, a chainsaw, and a trumpet. You could easily throw a futon on that list, because Aldi sells one.

Sohl Furniture Futon

What We Know:

The Sohl Furniture Futon is an ALDI Find, meaning it’s a limited-time item. It costs $89.99, which is a lot cheaper than most other futons we’ve seen, even private label brands from Target and Walmart. The futon folds out to five feet by three feet (approximately 60″ x 36″).

Because of the futon’s size, we sometimes see them stacked in an area separate from the rest of the ALDI Finds. In years past, we’ve seen them stacked over by the frozen foods or in the front of the store, depending on the store’s configuration. If you’re looking for a futon and don’t see one right away in your typical ALDI Finds sections, be sure to look around all parts of the store, just to be sure.

Aldi has been selling futons since 2017 and has consistently put them in stores in mid-July as part of its college furniture collection. Aldi sold a futon in 2017 for $79.99 and a futon in 2018 for $89.99, the same price as this one. As best as we can tell, Aldi has sold slightly different futons each of the first two years it has sold a futon. Aside from price, the dimensions of the futons change a little each year. Here’s what we reported in previous years:

  • 2017 SOHL Furniture Futon: In sofa form, it measures 67″ x 20″ x 31″. (We don’t have dimensions for the flat form.)
  • 2018 SOHL Furniture Futon: In sofa form, it measures 67.32″ x 30.71″ x 30.71″. Laying flat, it measures: 67.32″ x 38.19″ x 14.96″

The 2019 SOHL Furniture Futon measures 67.32″ x 29.92″ x 31.1″ in sofa form. It’s 67.32″ x 37.8″ x 15.55″ when laying flat.

The 2017, 2018, and 2019 futons are all different, with different dimensions, and different model numbers. However, both all models have had the same warranty length of 2 years.

In addition, both the 2018 and 2019 futon warranties are serviced by an e-mail with the address fufillmentservicesusa.com. We’ve interacted with this warranty company, and it was a poor experience: it took us weeks to get a hold of anyone and we eventually had to get Aldi involved, too.

What We Don’t Know:

Because Aldi has changed its futons — and apparently manufacturers — from year to year, it’s hard to know what to make of this futon. We haven’t previously tested any Aldi futons, but even if we had, we’re not sure how relevant those experiences would be with this futon. We don’t know how comfortable it is, or how easy it is to use, or how durable it is.

Do you have any experience with the Aldi futon? Feel free to let us know in the comments. (Be sure to tell us what year you bought it.)

  1. For the 2019 Futon … anyone have any idea what size (inches or name ) mattress topper would be the best fit?

    Thanks

  2. We just got one and it’s not as big as a twin bed. Longer than a crib. If you are using it as an extra bed, legs will stick out, but it could be used that way on the fly. I’d get one of those toppers that only sit on top or don’t have sides. Or use a thick quilt. We are using it as a seat in the playroom for teenagers who share a room otherwise.

Thanks for providing some info on your experience with this futon. Looking for a relatively small and multifunction sofa for a studio apartment. It’s between this and one from Ikea that costs $500. The $89 price tag is very tempting.

    • Are the legs in the box or in the futon itself when you buy it?

  3. You attach the legs. They are bars underneath the base. It’s very sturdy and was easy to attach. Bars get screwed on.

  4. Purchased summer of 2019. Easy to assemble and sturdy. On the firm side and am using in game room for my son. Let’s face it, kids sleep on floors all the time and this is an upgrade 😁. For $89, it’s a steal.

Hi purchased the 2019 model July ’19 and now need another (for the second daughter)… of course, haven’t found 2nd to purchase.. how & when will Aldi notify the public they have the 2020 futon available? 2019 is great, first daughter used it this year at Baylor University.. now high school daughter wants one for her room… really, really gotta find another!

  6. They seem to have them late July, early August.

  7. Bought one in July 2017 for college bound son. Wood frame broke on front (when sitting) sometime in the dorm this past school year. Don’t know how many male(s) athlete(s) we’re sitting on it when it happened. Husband repaired it with steel bar. Broke again when son laid on it. Problem is wood is very soft and wood screws from the repair tore out. Happy it worked for 2 1/2 years in dorm, since we probably only paid $80. Good buy for a while or lighter weight people. Worked as a guest bed summer 2018.

  8. I was so excited to find this Futon! I’ve been looking for something exactly like it, it’s comfortable, easy to assemble & the perfect color for my kids room! Unfortunately it’s ripped in the seams. When it’s down laying flat the middle seam holding the top to the bottom is split & getting bigger. Then not long after that split the stitching in between what looks like a button is coming apart. I’m so very sad because it’s perfect & pretty & inexpensive. I didn’t get more that 2 months out of it before it started to split at the seams. My mother in law has one too & it’s perfect still. She doesn’t lay it flat like my kids do but so far hers has held up better than mine.😔

  9. I have just purchased this second hand and I can’t figure out how to pack away the black stability legs once I have finished with the bed and want the couch again. I have tried pushing, pulling, twisting and everything else I can think of but I just can’t get them to move.. Anyone able to help me? Thanks
