Our Aldi Wish List for 2020

Aldi Wish List

In our view, Aldi is constantly getting better. Each year the grocer tweaks its products, increases its shelf space, and adds new and awesome things to its shelves.

Still, no store is perfect, and a limited inventory store like Aldi is going to have holes. ALDI Finds do a good job of filling the gaps, but there are still a handful of things we wished the store had, or had more often.

We asked our writers to come up with a few items they’d like to see in Aldi stores in 2020: products we haven’t seen before, or seen in a while, or wished we could see more often. Here are our thoughts; feel free to share your own in the comments.

Joshua’s List:

Private Label Dental Floss. Aldi has a pretty good toiletries section, but one glaring omission is dental floss. In our stores I don’t even see brand name floss, much less a Dentiguard variety. It’s something I’ve been hoping to see for years now. It would be nice to see it finally happen.

Solar Power USB Charger. Aldi sold this little number a few years ago as a limited buy during the summer, but it hasn’t been seen on store shelves since. I’d love to have a way to charge my USB devices through solar power, especially when off the grid.

Filet Mignon. The grocer has a nice steak selection, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a couple of additions to the lineup, even as ALDI Finds. Top on my list? A genuine filet mignon. (And, no, I’m not talking about that other filet Aldi sells.) I know this is a pretty upscale cut of meat, even for Aldi, but even seeing a supply of these around, say, the start of grilling season would be a real treat.

Rachael’s List:

Single Lemons and Limes. Aldi sells bags of lemons and limes, but most of the time I only need one lemon or lime and not six to eight. I either have to buy a whole bag and make lemonade or limeade (and my family and I don’t need that extra sugar) or go to another grocery store to buy a single citrus fruit.

Single tomatoes. Similar to the lemon and lime quandary mentioned above, sometimes I only need one large beefsteak, hot house, or Roma tomato for slicing and putting on sandwiches or burgers for one meal. Aldi only sells large tomatoes in packs of two or more, and sometimes the extra tomato(es) languish on my counter because we don’t eat them quickly enough. It’d be nice if I could buy just one if that’s all I need.

Potato Salad and Pasta Salad. These are available during the spring and summer cookout season, but there are other times of year when I want to serve potato or pasta salad, and I have to go to a different store to get it. It’d be good to have some basic versions year round. I know I’m not alone in this because I recently saw a couple in Aldi who were hunting — to no avail — for the potato salad they knew they’d seen before, but Aldi doesn’t carry it during the winter months.

Kelly’s List:

Ham Cubes. We use these in a variety of casseroles and meals because of the convenience. Toss them into a breakfast casserole, egg burrito, bean soup, etc. They are also great to turn a salad into a meal!

Petite Diced Tomatoes and Full-Sized Cans of Tomato Sauce. My family is very picky about the size of the tomatoes in soups, stews, and casseroles. We also makes lots of these type meals in the winter and it is a pain to deal with multiple smaller cans of sauce.

Shredded Cabbage. This is another important ingredient for many of our favorite meals and requires a regular trip to another grocery story since it is perishable. We use it in things like fish tacos, egg roll in a bowl, and oriental slaw.

Elizabeth’s List:

Deutsche Küche Egg Spaetzle. These are hands-down the best egg noodles, ever, and trust me, I can make noodles from scratch, but these are still the best. What makes them so good is a) you can use them in soup and even if you freeze and/or reheat the leftovers, they won’t bloat and disintegrate into mush, and b) the flavor tastes homemade and genuinely eggy, not bland and boring, and c) they have more protein per serving than your average noodle, so they’re more filling and a bit healthier, too.

Deutsche Küche Red Cabbage with Apples. Aldi sells a decent sauerkraut year round, but it only breaks out its less pungent cousin during German Week. This kraut is milder, sweeter, and (arguably) more versatile and kid-friendly than the regular variety. It’s delicious with pork, chicken, sausage, and sandwiches.

Christkindl Glühwein. I probably wouldn’t use this holiday wine year-round, but I wish it would stay in stores until spring instead of disappearing soon after the new year. During cold, dark evenings, it’s very pleasant to warm up and sip this sweet, spicy mulled wine. But it’s also my secret ingredient in homemade cranberry sauce, plus I can reduce it into a thick, non-alcoholic syrup for pork or dark meat poultry. I look forward to it every year.

  1. I would love to see a grocery service like Walmart has, where you place an order, pay on line, someone shops it, and then all I have to do is pick it up. This service has replaced a lot, but not all, of my Aldi grocery runs. It costs nothing and actually saves me money because I’m not walking around the store, hungry, and putting items in my cart that I didn’t need when I created my list.

    • Just remember that they have to pay someone to do your shopping. That extra employee’s salary will then have to be factored into the price of their products. Aldi is great at keeping their prices low by also keeping lower payroll costs. Besides, I always have to shop the middle isles first!

  2. Aldi does better. They deliver it to your door.

  3. I would love to see more low carb choices. There’s a huge market for low carb foods – diabetics, pre-diabetics, people dieting. Aldi does many things very well, but not in this area. There seems to be a huge emphasis on gluten-free foods at Aldi’s – how about giving the people who need a low carb diet a break?

  4. I would like to see Egg Nog available more often, not just around Christmas SeAson. Can never find any Egg Nog after Christmas Season.

  5. I would like to see some lactose free dairy products on a regular basis (ice cream, cottage cheese etc.). I shop the Geneseo or Hornell NY stores.

  6. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE LOW SUGAR PEANUTBUTTER WITH CHIA&FLAX SSED ALL THE TIME

  7. I would like to see Aldi carry tofu and vegan cheese year-round rather than once or twice a year. I have to go to another store to get those. Also, at least at my store, the bananas are terrible. They are either all very green or all overripe.

  8. I would love to see single lemons and limes too.
Also more low-sodium choices – especially soups, sandwich meats, canned vegetables. The soups they carry are incredibly high in sodium so I don’t buy soup from ALDI. Buying processed food as we do, we all consume way too much salt.

  9. 1) More single item produce
    2) More options in soda pop
    3) A rewards card or opportunities for Aldi coupons or rebates

My family loves Aldi! I’ve pretty much quit shopping anywhere else, except for items that aren’t necessarily grocery. Aldi is my go-to favorite! There is such a great variety of products and I always save so much!

  10. I wish Aldi’s would carry Folio Cheese Wraps which is a hot item and most other stores sell out.

  11. The sweet potato casserole all year

  12. I just want an Aldi closer to home. The closest one is about 30 minutes away.
