Seasons Choice Hash Brown Sticks Shredded Potatoes

Aldi keeps a pretty good stock of starches in the frozen section. Aldi carries seasoned French fries, crinkle cut fries, and steak fries, all as everyday Regular Buys. If you’re looking for something other than fries, Aldi also sells tater tots, and for the breakfast crowd, Aldi stocks solid Regular Buy hash brown patties.

The grocer will sometimes sprinkle limited buys into the mix, from curly fries to potato circles. Not long ago, we spotted something we hadn’t seen before: hash brown sticks. We decided to take them for a spin.

Season’s Choice Hash Brown Sticks are an Aldi Find, which means they’re only in stores for a limited time. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. At post time, the bag was 22.93 ounces and cost $2.49. That comes out to around 11 cents an ounce.

The bag comes with both oven instructions and, helpfully, air fryer instructions as well.

To cook in the oven, preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Next, spread the sticks in a single layer on a non-stick baking sheet. Then, place the sticks in the oven and cook for 10 minutes, flip the sticks over, and cook for another 8-12 minutes, or until the sticks are a light golden color.

To cook in the air fryer, preheat the fryer to 400 degrees. Next, place the sticks in a single layer in the basket. Then, cook for 8-10 minutes, or until the sticks are a light golden color.

We went with the air fryer method. I ended up cooking them closer to 12 minutes to achieve the desired color and crispness, but your mileage may vary.

The flavor and texture reminded us more of long tater tots than hash brown patties. They weren’t as dense as a patty, instead with that lighter feel that we’d associate with a tot. We liked them, but they reminded us a little less of what we’d take with eggs and more like what we might eat at other times of the day with a burger or chicken tenders. We thought they paired well enough with eggs, though.

The Verdict:

These Aldi hash brown sticks are pretty good, although closer to a tot than a patty. Whether you like them or not will depend on your tastes, but if you’re a fan of potato products, these are probably a safe choice for trying at least once. Otherwise, if you get tater tots you’re going to get a lot of the same taste and texture.

  2. Yes! My sister and I came across these and we tried them and LOVED them in the air fryer. So perfect with breakfast, but could also be with lunch. Very versatile! I also want to know when they will be back in Michigan. I’ve been looking for them ever since I bought the first bag.
