Serra Ladies Cardigan Sweater

Perhaps it’s because I grew up watching Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, but I love to wear cardigans. They go well with everything from business casual to dresses to t-shirts and jeans. Aldi sells a variety of clothing throughout the year, but I had never seen cardigans there until recently. I purchased one to try.

Serra Ladies Cardigan Sweater

The Serra Ladies Cardigan Sweater sold for $12.99 at the time of publication, and it came in three colors.

In a baffling move by Aldi that I’ve seen them do with several items of clothing and shoes lately, the sizing availability for these sweaters was different depending on the color and style. A gray crew style was available in sizes medium through extra large, a pink crew in sizes small and large, and a navy v-neck in sizes medium through extra large. Unfortunately, you’re out of luck if the color you want does not come in your size.

Sizes for the cardigans run like this:

  • Small: sizes 4-6
  • Medium: sizes 8-10
  • Large: sizes 12-14
  • Extra large: sizes 16-18

I’m sure Aldi has a reason for the wonky size availability, but it can be frustrating. On a related note, my daughter loved a pair of slip-on memory foam shoes I bought for her at Aldi last year. When the shoes returned to stores again this winter, we wanted to buy another pair or two, but they only offered my daughter’s size in the boys’ shoe design and not the girls’ shoe design. It was disappointing.

Anyway, these cardigans are ALDI Finds (Special Buys), which means they are only in stores for a short time. So get them while they last.

All of the cardigans are made of 80% cotton and 20% nylon, and they’re OEKO-TEX certified, meaning they’ve been tested for and are free of harmful substances. They’re made in China.

Washing instructions state to machine wash cold with like colors using the gentle cycle. Tumble dry low and remove promptly. Warm iron if needed.

So how does it fit?

I wear a 6 or 8, or typically a medium, so I purchased the gray sweater in a medium. I’ve had mixed success with how Aldi’s clothing has fit me in the past, so while I was tempted to also pick up a navy cardigan, I held off until I could find out whether I liked the gray one.

The first thing I noticed upon taking the sweater out of its packaging bundle is that it seems a little short. It’s not super short, but I often prefer mid-hip-length sweaters for the better coverage they offer. It looks longer on the model who is wearing it on the package. Its shorter length might make it ideal for wearing with dresses, where the short length may be less noticeable. It’s fitted or tailored enough that it would go well with a dress or skirt, although it’s also fine for pairing with jeans or leggings.

When I put it on, the sleeves are snug, so keep that in mind when deciding what kinds of shirts to layer under this cardigan.

It’s also a thin material, ideal for when you want a bit of warmth during milder weather. That makes sense, since Aldi sold this sweater in early March with the prospect of warmer weather arriving soon.

With that all said, this cardigan works fine for me, but it doesn’t impress me enough to make me want to go back and purchase the navy cardigan as well, especially because I have found quality cardigans for less money at some of the better thrift stores in my area. If Aldi puts these cardigans on clearance, I might think again and get the blue one.

The Verdict:

The Serra Ladies Cardigan Sweater comes in gray, pink, or navy (but each color has different size availability, which we don’t understand). They have snug sleeves and are made of a thinner material. They’re what you might wear when the weather is milder and you want something lightweight to add just a bit of warmth.
