Specially Selected Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels

We’re both amazed and a little terrified by the Aldi sweets selection. We’re amazed because the grocer has served up a wonderful collection of treats in its Regular Buy and Aldi Finds sections. We’re terrified because, if we bought them all, we’d probably double in size. (And as product reviewers, we end up buying a lot of it.)

Recently, we spotted these little things on the store’s shelves. They’re not at all your typical knockoff of a big name brand like Hershey’s chocolate bars or Reese’s peanut butter cups. Instead, these are a take on Sanders dark chocolate sea salt caramels, which you can find in many stores, including online at Walmart or Amazon.

Specially Selected Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels are an Aldi Regular Buy, which means you can find them in stores all the time. At the time of this post, these caramels cost $2.85 for 9 ounces, or 31.7 cents an ounce. That’s not cheap, but it is a lot less than the 58 cents an ounce that Sanders caramels cost. If you want this particular kind of treat, this is pretty inexpensive.

The chocolate is Rainforest Alliance certified for sustainability.

The packaging refers to them as “a decadent trio of handcrafted buttery caramel, luxurious dark chocolate and crunchy sea salt.” And that’s exactly what they are. They’re a caramel dessert in a distinctive dark chocolate coating and sprinkled with a generous helping of salt. The taste is a complex mix of sweet caramel, rich dark chocolate, and saltiness, while the texture is a little chewy and a little crunchy. The sweet-salty combination made me think, in a vague way, of chocolate-covered pretzels, although these obviously are a different kind of treat.

Be aware that these are fairly high in fat and calories, and they have some sodium, too. They also contain a number of allergens, including milk and soy and possibly also peanuts, tree nuts, and wheat.

The Verdict:

These decadent treats are as good as advertised. The taste is a rich mix of flavors and texture. They’re not the cheapest dessert, but they’re cheaper than their name-brand counterparts. Worth a look if you’re into sweet-salty things.

  1. I’m curious as to how these will stand up to Kroger’s Private Selection Milk Chocolate Sea Salted Caramels. First I realize PS are milk chocolate. PS are delicious and rich and looks like they may be a little larger size pieces (9 pieces in 7.5 oz) vs (14 pieces in 9 oz) in these.
    We shall see.
