Specially Selected Wood-Fired Neapolitan Style Flatbread Pizza

Pizza is almost always a winner in my house. Whether it’s frozen stuffed crust pizza, take and bake deli pizza, homemade pizza with crust made from yeast packets, or pizza made from ready to bake dough, we like it all. Aldi sells a variety of pizzas as everyday Regular Buys, and the grocer also frequently rotates other pizzas into its lineup as limited-time specials.

Most recently, I picked up a couple of flatbread pizzas to serve on a busy school night.

Specially Selected Wood-Fired Flatbread Pizza

Specially Selected Wood-Fired Neapolitan Style Flatbread Pizza cost $5.49 for a 12.5-ounce pizza at the time of publication. It was sold in two flavors: BBQ Chicken and Classic Combo Supreme.

As mentioned above, this pizza is an Aldi Find, so it’s only in stores for a short time. Each store gets one shipment, and after that sells out, this pizza is gone unless Aldi decides to bring it back at some point. Aldi does not offer online ordering for products that aren’t in stock at your local store.

Neapolitan pizza, according to The Spruce Eats, originated in Naples, Italy, and is prepared with a basic dough and fresh, simple ingredients. The pizza is briefly baked in an 800-degree wood-fired oven. True Neapolitan pizzas must meet certain requirements and use very specific ingredients, including certain kinds of cheese and certain types of tomatoes, so while this Aldi pizza is not an official Neapolitan pizza, it does share some features with Neapolitan pizza, such as the fact that it was baked in an extremely hot wood-fired oven.

The boxes for these Aldi pizzas state that these were baked in a wood-fired oven at 800 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 minutes to create “a light smoky flavor and a perfectly charred bubbly crust with a soft warm interior texture.”

The boxes also state that “this wood-fired cooking technique gives this pizza special flavor and exceptional texture that cannot be duplicated in a standard pizza oven.”

To bake the pizza, preheat your oven to 400 degrees and remove the pizza from the packaging. Place the forzen pizza on a baking pan coated lightly with cooking spray. Place the pan on the middle rack and bake for 10-12 minutes or until the pizza reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees as measured by a food thermometer. Allow to cool for 2-3 minutes before serving.

My family liked both of these pizzas. They were quick and easy to bake in the oven, and they didn’t stick to the baking pan. They were also easy to slice up and serve. The dough is chewy on the edges with occasional air bubbles and some lightly charred spots, which is typical for this style of pizza. The main part of the pizza is soft and loaded with flavorful toppings.

The box describes this as “Neapolitan style wood-fired pizza crust, topped with seasoned chicken breast, barbecue sauce, cheddar cheese, fresh cilantro, caramelized onions & corn.”

While many BBQ pizzas are on the spicy side, this one is not. (In fact, I think the Classic Combo Supreme pizza is spicier than this BBQ Chicken one.) This features a mild sauce, cheese, and diced chicken. I wished it had a little more cilantro, but perhaps that’s a good thing for those who don’t like that particular herb. The corn kernels are an interesting addition and I liked them, although they are on the chewy side and tend to get stuck in your teeth. Even my pickier eater ate all of this pizza, and they’re not usually one to like unusual pizza flavors such as BBQ, so that’s saying something.

Not surprisingly, this is loaded with calories, fat, sodium, and carbs, but it’s a pizza and intended to be enjoyed in moderation. A single serving (1/3 of the pizza) has 290 calories, 6 grams of total fat (8% DV), 3 grams of saturated fat (15% DV), 800 mg of sodium (35% DV), 46 grams of total carbohydrates (17% DV), and 5 grams of added sugars (10% DV).

If you’re looking out for allergens, this BBQ Chicken pizza contains milk, wheat, and soy.

The box describes this as “Neapolitan style wood-fired pizza crust topped with our signature pizza sauce, mozzarella and parmesan cheese, pepperoni, pork sausage, beef toppings, mushrooms, olives, onions and green peppers.”

This pizza features lots of flavorful meat toppings. It didn’t seem quite as generous on the veggies, but it contains a decent amount. The sausage has a mild spiciness to it, but it’s not overly spicy. Even my kids who don’t like spicy foods ate all of this pizza. It’s a nice option if you just want a classic-style pizza.

Again, this is pizza, so it’s not great for you. One serving (1/3 of the pizza) has 300 calories, 10 grams of total fat (13% DV), 4 grams of saturated fat (20% DV), 960 mg of sodium (42% DV), 40 grams of total carbohydrates (15% DV), and less than 1 gram of added sugars (1% DV).

If you’re looking out for allergens, this Classic Combo Supreme pizza contains milk and wheat. The box also warns that an occasional pit or fragment may remain in the olives on this pizza.

The Verdict:

Specially Selected Wood-Fired Neapolitan Style Flatbread Pizza comes in two flavors: BBQ Chicken and Classic Combo Supreme. We like both. The BBQ Chicken pizza is not spicy and features unique toppings including fresh cilantro and corn. The Classic Combo Supreme pizza features lots of meats and veggies. The pizza crust is chewy, bubbly, and lightly charred from baking for a brief time in an 800-degree wood-fired oven. If you’re looking for a twist on pizza night, these are worth a try.
