Sundae Shoppe Gelato Flight: Pumpkin Pie, Candy Cane, and Eggnog

If you have never tried gelato, you’re in for a treat with this creamy dessert that is similar to ice cream. Gelato is frozen like ice cream, and you can eat it with a spoon or in a cone like ice cream. However, gelato differs from ice cream in several ways.

First, gelato has a more creamy, smooth, and silky texture compared to ice cream, and it’s more dense than ice cream. Second, gelato contains more milk and less cream than ice cream, and it also does not traditionally contain egg yolks, which are a common ice cream ingredient (although some of these Aldi gelato flavors shown below do have egg). Third, gelato has less butterfat than ice cream. And finally, gelato is served about 10-15 degrees warmer than ice cream, so you experience less overall tongue numbing.

Aldi sells gelato occasionally as a limited-time special, and the flavors vary depending on the season. Most recently, the discount grocery store sold a carton containing three small containers of gelato in three different fall or Christmas-themed flavors. The carton contains one individual cup of pumpkin pie-flavored gelato, one cup of candy cane-flavored gelato, and one cup of eggnog-flavored gelato.

Sundae Shoppe Gelato Flight

The Sundae Shoppe Gelato Flight cost $3.99 for 13.2 ounces at the time of publication, with each serving coming in at 4.4 ounces. That comes out to $1.33 per serving. The gelato is imported from Italy, and the package states this features “a trio of three creamy holiday-inspired Italian gelatos served in individual cups. Perfect for holiday gatherings.”

If you’re not familiar with the term, a “flight” in this sense refers to a set of samples or a selection of various different flavors of a product such as wine, beer, or cheese. In other words, this Aldi gelato flight simply means it contains several different gelato flavors you can sample yourself or share with others.

Read on for more information about each flavor:

  • Sundae Shoppe Pumpkin Pie Gelato — This tastes exactly like pumpkin pie. It’s a dead ringer for the classic holiday pie. If you froze pumpkin pie filling and turned it into gelato, this is what you would get. One of our taste testers named this as their favorite flavor alongside the eggnog flavor. This pumpkin pie flavor is the only gelato cup in this flight that doesn’t include some kind of topping like cinnamon or chocolate. If you’re looking out for allergens, this contains milk, egg, and coconut. It may contain soy, wheat, tree nuts, or peanuts.
  • Sundae Shoppe Candy Cane Gelato — If you like mint chip ice cream, you’ll probably like this gelato flavor. It has good mint flavor, and the crunchy dark chocolate curls and flakes on top are a nice touch. Two of our taste testers dubbed this their favorite flavor. This contains milk, coconut, and soy. It may contain eg, wheat, tree nuts, or peanuts.
  • Sundae Shoppe Eggnog Gelato — This had a softer consistency than the other flavors for some reason. It has a thick layer of cinnamon on top and a vanilla-y flavor. I didn’t think this flavor tasted exactly like eggnog, but it’s very close, and it’s good. This was a favorite flavor for one of our taste testers. This contains milk, egg, and coconut. It may contain soy, wheat, tree nuts, or peanuts.

The Verdict:

The Sundae Shoppe Gelato Flight contains three individual serving cups in different flavors: pumpkin pie, candy cane, and eggnog. All of these flavors are good. If you enjoy seasonal holiday desserts and you also like gelato — or if you’re wanting to try gelato for the first time — you can’t go wrong with this gelato flight.
