If there’s one thing we’ve learned in this business, it’s that sometimes we see a big thing coming, and sometimes we don’t. We’ve proactively written about robot vacuums, and Advent wine calendars, and pressure cookers, and teal cabinets because we had a sneaking suspicion they would turn out to be popular items, and we were right. Other times, though, things have snuck up on us, as was the case when Aldi’s reformulated peanut butter cups suddenly became a thing.
But amidst the many items Aldi has sold, few have proven to be as mysterious and unpredictable, to us at least, as L’Oven Fresh Zero Net Carbs Bread. Perhaps because of the intriguing title, and maybe because of the current interest in keto (more on this in a moment), and no doubt because of the large and growing Aldi communities online, this little item ended up being a surprise.
Not only did it vanish from stores as soon as it arrived, but it led to a chain reaction of events we don’t see often with Aldi products. People clamored for it, stores allegedly asked each other about it, a small re-seller market sprouted up around it, and rumors swirled it might even be back again soon.
It’s a lot to think about, so let’s break it down.
A Brief History of Zero Net Carbs Bread
In the last few years, in part due to emerging research, people have started to rethink the wisdom of a high-carb diet. Low-carb (or at least lower-carb) diets are more popular now than ever, thanks to the rise of the ketogenic (keto) diet and other low-carb regiments. Where there’s food demand, you can bet the food industry will look to meet it, which is why we’ve seen grocers, including Aldi, roll out a legion of more low-carb-friendly foods.
The hardest place to do this is with food that traditionally is made up of carbs, like foods made from rice, potatoes, or wheat. One solution is to substitute cauliflower, which is generally lower in carbs while also being gluten-free for those who have gluten considerations. (While cauliflower can lower the carbs, you should always check the nutrition information, since the decrease may not be as steep as you think.)
Bread is one of the big roadblocks to a keto diet. Bread is a staple for many meals — breakfast and lunch especially — and many keto disciples have lamented the difficulties in finding suitable substitutes for bread. Coming up with a low-carb bread is challenging: after all, bread is made from wheat, and cauliflower isn’t going to fix that problem.
The solution is not to replace wheat entirely, but to reformulate the wheat and oats in such a way that all, or nearly all, of the carbs in the bread are from fiber. This is where the “zero net carbs” label comes from, because while such bread does technically have carbohydrates in it, fiber is a type of carb that your body doesn’t absorb, instead passing it straight through. (One potential problem is that you’re putting a lot of fiber into your system, which could impact things at the other end of your digestive system.)
Whether or not you agree with the belief that this kind of bread is legitimately “keto friendly” depends on your point of view, but I think the point that your body doesn’t turn the carbs into fat or energy makes for a pretty compelling case.
A few companies have taken a stab at this kind of bread, but reviews have have been mixed. The biggest complaint is texture: getting the bread to a place where it feels like regular bread is hard, and not everyone likes the way low-carb bread feels in the mouth or going down the throat. Nevertheless, for the low-carb faithful, it’s worth at least giving it a try.
September 2019: The ALDI Find Bread
When Aldi announced it was selling Zero Net Carbs Bread among its ALDI Finds in September of 2019, we took note but didn’t figure it would make a massive blip on the radar. Sure, other Aldi low-carb items have generally been popular, but they haven’t been the kind of thing people knock the doors down over. Still, we thought enough of it that we figured we’d pick it up and try it for ourselves when it came out, at least to let the keto crowd know if it was bread-like enough to be worth the relatively reasonable $2.99 per loaf.
We couldn’t find it.
This price marker was the only sign that the bread had been in our store.
Now, in our experience, not being able to locate an ALDI Find translates to either a supply issue or a demand issue. In some cases, we’ve discovered that a product isn’t in stock because it just didn’t make it to stores. This has happened to us before, like when we had to wait a couple of weeks to get a Visage Pro Series Electric Rotary Shaver or wait a full year to finally score a Gardenline 18.5 Gallon Tumbling Composter.
Other times, a product is so popular that it flies off of shelves right away and we never get a chance to get it. This can happen, too — the Aldi wine Advent calendar is the best example — although in our experience it’s less common.
With the bread, we assumed it was a supply problem. We were wrong.
It was demand. Shoppers who had learned of the bread through various social media communities and message boards descended on the stores to score the bread the day it released, with the hype for this bread far exceeding the supply. It didn’t take long before people took to the internet to complain they couldn’t find it.
In some cases, it was the collective effort of several shoppers, but there were also reports online of single individuals flying in and buying up a single store’s entire inventory, probably intending to freeze the loaves for consumption later. (Aldi sometimes sets per-person limits on products, but it did not in this case, maybe because it, like us, didn’t expect this to happen.) In a couple of isolated cases, those mass buyers even took to eBay to resell the bread, although at the time of this post I didn’t spot more than a couple of examples of that.
Now, Aldi stores are used to people asking about long-gone products, but in this case it seems they weren’t quite sure what to do, since I’m not sure they anticipated this, either. Some of those stores allegedly even called around to other stores trying to figure out who still had the stuff. It was a rare craze on a company that actively tries to avoid dealing with crazes.
October 2019: The (Short-Lived) Regular Buy Bread
In mid-to-late September 2019, multiple people on social media — including Aldi employees — claimed that Aldi was bringing back the zero net carbs bread in October 2019 as an everyday Regular Buy. A few even showed Regular Buy price stickers to prove it. At the time, we reached out repeatedly to Aldi’s PR firm to confirm this, but we did not receive a response, and customers we interacted with who contacted Aldi customer service were repeatedly told the bread would not be returning.
However, in October, we caught sight of the bread for ourselves, on the Regular Buy shelves at one of our local Aldi stores.

However, even as we reviewed the bread, we continued to hear from customers via comments, emails, and social media posts telling us they still couldn’t find it. What’s more, when customers contacted Aldi, they got mixed messages about the bread: some customers reported being told that stores weren’t carrying it … even after we’d seen and purchased it ourselves.
In addition, while we saw the bread in October on our local store’s shelves as a Regular Buy — and there was a price sign indicating the bread is a Regular Buy product — the bread disappeared, again, not long after.
So what happened?
One, there didn’t appear to be any pattern to stores getting the zero net carbs bread versus those not getting it. In our relatively large metro area (St. Louis, Missouri), some of our stores had it, while other stores don’t even have a sign for it. It wasn’t clear to us how stores are chosen to get the stuff.
Two, there seemed to be a disconnect between Aldi customer service and what’s going on in stores. Aldi customer service reported a situation different from what’s going on in the stores, which in our experience doesn’t usually happen.
Case in point: we reached out directly to Aldi to ask about the first point above — namely, if there was a pattern to stores that received the bread. (We made a point to identify ourselves as bloggers for Aldi Reviewer.) Here’s the response we got:
We always appreciate hearing from our customers. Due to the limited space in our stores, we are unable to carry every product consistently throughout the year. Our ALDI Finds and Seasonal programs allow us to offer certain items for a limited time; however, we are unable to confirm details or availability for these items in advance. Every participating ALDI store receives a limited number of these products, so we encourage customers to visit our website, www.aldi.us, to sign up for our weekly email to stay up-to-date on the latest information regarding upcoming ALDI Find and Seasonal items*.
We didn’t find that very helpful.
Three, Aldi appeared to be having a really hard time keeping up with demand. Our best guess is that Aldi didn’t anticipate it, and the vendor Aldi is (or was) using, whoever that is, had difficulty scaling up production to keep up. Aldi likes predictability, so this has to be a hard situation for the grocer to be in.
Four, some customers were scooping up several loaves at a time. More than one person has boasted about picking up several loaves in one trip, possibly out of fear that if they don’t there won’t be any later. The problem is that it means that an entire store inventory can get cleaned out by just a few customers. Aldi could probably solve some of this problem by limiting customers to 1-2 loaves per purchase, but so far it doesn’t look like most stores are doing that.
January 2020: Return of the Bread
Aldi, for its part, appears to be finally ramping up production. In November, we called the official Aldi customer service number, and found a recorded message saying that the grocer was looking to supply the bread year-round, and was working with suppliers to make it happen, but could not confirm a specific target date at that time. We heard rumors of a possible January 2020 date.
Those rumors proved true. In mid-January, the bread came back to stores in our area, and we heard reports online of others seeing the same. In our store, it was a limit of 2 per person.

My Mom went looking for the bread for me and the employee also said that the bread would be back in October as a regular item (North Carolina ).

I went to Aldi’s tonight couldn’t find the bread and asked an associate when they might get some. He said he didn’t know if they would rather curtly and left it at that so I went on the web to see if I could get some information. Thank you for your article. Hope you are right. For someone who has given up bread for decades this is a very important matter to me.
This bread is awesome! I happened to score two loaves (they had a set limit) a couple weeks ago. I literally just ate my last piece while reading this article. I’ve tried other low/no carb bread and it didn’t taste great and had a weird texture. This tastes and feels like regular bread! I’ll be stalking the shelves for it to return!
I also got the last 2 loaves the morning it came out at my local store!! I’m down to my last 8 or so slices. It is goooooood!!! Definitely the most bread like low carb bread I’ve had. I told my sister-in-law about it that first week I had it and her first response was “bet it tastes like cardboard!” Absolutely not! It’s edible and hits the spot when you want bread, I’ve made grilled cheese, BLT’s and Reuben sandwiches with it and I can’t wait till it becomes a regular item and I can have a loaf every week. It’s a GameChanger for my diet!
I’ve tried my fair share of zero carb bread the past 2 years. This, by far, is the best I’ve had. Congrats to Aldi!! I sincerely hope this becomes a regular product. I only have 2 frozen loaves left and I’m rationing. 😬
Bring back the Zero carb bread so I can try them. I have gone looking all over Chicago and the Suburbs area with no luck! 🙁
I’m in Wichita KS and can’t find it
It’s very confusing. A store further away had the bread once and I bought two the allotment permitted per person. The other day I asked whether they ever got new bread in and the lady which worked their pointed to it and I saw the one and only loaf in the store. I grabbed it gleefully of course. Our local store had the bread for the first time yesterday and both bins were fully stocked. I was puzzled yet delighted and bought one more. Today we went again and I curiously passed the two bins and they were fully stocked. Either they had more in the back or it didn’t sell because it stopped being elusive.
Now I saw a sign on the water too which permitted only 2 cases per person.
I was curious and asked the cashier what was going on. She responded with the fear of the new virus, people are going bonkers and are getting extra water. What??? We still get faucet water don’t we?
I had called and written to Aldi’s to ask them to make it a “regular” item. Got an email yesterday, which sounded straight up negative. We have no plans as of yet to bring this in as we only have so much shelf space blah blah. Funny its a bigger store I go to as well. Sure hope the info you have is correct. The reviews I’ve seen say it has zero flavor but it toasts up nicely, is crunchy and eat close to regular bread. I’ve not yet heard of uh “digestive issues” from it though! Here’s hoping

On a personal situation, I’ve been waiting for a Cheeseburger Pizza and I’ve been waiting for a whole year (February 2019) I took a photo of the box before it was discarded and I’ve looked every time I’m at the store.
What can I add…? I get a ‘Dear John’ letter of nothing.
I happened onto this bread earlier this month. I bought it because of it’s low sodium content, which is simply a must for my heart issues. Turns out the bread was fantastic, and I was excited about getting to eat toast or a sandwich where the bread alone did not eat up my sodium allotment for an entire meal. Sadly, I went to Aldi today to score another loaf only to find that it is gone. I was told it was a temporary product and would not be coming back. I do hope that’s not the case.
I was lucky enough to be at the store when they took it out from the back. I bought 6 loaves because I had never seen it! I went back to the store to check if they still had it and it was gone within the hour. I just finished my last loaf this week and I am now so sad! I hope they bring it back, it tasted like reg wheat bread and was delicious for being a 0 carb bread

We got our hands on some of it today, so clearly the official word from Aldi customer service is different than what’s in stores.
I wondering if that was just some existing stock from the back room,I live like 100 miles from ALDI’S headquarters,and distribution,and every ALDI in this area had it for 1 day a month ago,and it all sold out,and nobody has got it back.
I don’t believe so, as it’s showing up in a number of places nationwide now, and the price sticker is that of a Regular Buy, not an ALDI Find.
So it’s the same price,if this is true ALDI must be strategizing because they don’t want the big rush to sell it all out,and all the store employees are being kept in the dark.

I used the bread and enjoyed it for what it was very much. An I will be purchasing it in the future and using it in all types of recipes. That is if Loven Fresh provides it for us to purchase. It is a win win for us who love the keto life style
I went to my Aldi store in Chicago and bought two loaves. Now they’re out. It was very good!! The question no one asks is WHO MAKES IT? Someone’s got to know, I’d pay a lot more for it. How do we find out other sources for it? The secret to its texture is the gluten.
A lot of ALDI product is made in Northeren Illinois,where their headquartered for the U.S. not sure about the bread. I would presume it is, since we have plenty of huge bakery’s in this area.
I just looked and it says the LOVEN FRESH bakery is in Oakland, Tennessee.
I received a email from customer service st Aldi’s and was told it was a special item and will NOT be returning on a regular basis. Received email last week.:(
Went to two Aldi’s in the Raleigh, NC area and no go :-(… I finally asked an associate at the second one, and they said they have been getting asked over and over for it and they have never received any. They also did not know if or when it would come in. 🙁
I live in High Point and they told me it should come in sometime this month. They also had been asked a lot about it as well.
Aldi in Ardmore OK said it was not Regular buy and they don’t have any just yesterday. Oct 14.
Btw, like many old brands such as Sara Lee, it is made by Bimbo bakeries, a huge Mexican owned company.

Good news,the no carb bread made it to our local ALDI,in Northeren Illinois. I walked past it without seeing it the first time,because it was in front of all the other bread,but not actully with the other bread. The second time I walked by I saw it,they had a 2 loaf limit,and only had I would say 12-15 out,they also said it was going to be a permanent item,so that’s good news.
Still waiting for it to make a return here in Maryland! Like many others, I bought several loaves (5). Gave one to a friend to try and froze the others. I used my last two end pieces on a lunch sandwich today, so I hope it hits the east coast as a regular buy soon.
Found it locally only 5 miles from home at Aldi’s in Glendale Heights, IL. Bought the last 2 loaves. Clerk said more deliveries come on mon, wed, friday, saturday. Only 1 kind was in stock and it tastes pretty good. No complaints!!
I grabbed 2 loaves while it was in stock and I ate BLT’s to my heart’s content. I have enough left one last sandwich with sun-ripened tomatoes!! I hope it becomes a regular item as I would also like grilled cheese!!
How about Columbus Ohio. Are we ever going to see it again? Best zero carb bread out there.

I live in Roanoke Virginia and was told the middle of October for our store. So I’m hopeful they will start selling it here soon. But it will fly off the shelf because there are a lot of low carb Keto people in Roanoke. I am hoping this will be a trend for other food items to go low carb to help so many people to get healthy. Convenience it’s a big part of staying healthy because so many do not like to cook. Personally I love cooking new items I’ve never tried before such as cauliflower and brussel sprouts. Now I love them. And I do love our Aldi store in Roanoke.
Find out the days the trucks come in,and make sure you get there right when they open.

Your ALDI’S should be getting it by now. I live in Northeren Illinois and we’ve had it for a few weeks now. Just make sure you look good,it may not be in the regular bread section, so you could miss it if you don’t look carefully,or ask an employee.

I bought 7 loaves in St Louis on Saturday, and find it delicious. It taste like regular wheat bread to me.
Our ALDI only allows people to buy 2 max.
I was advised by two separate ALDI workers that the bread has been discontinued.
First of all, I was dying to taste the miracle bread just to satisfy my interest and second of all I question– how can a baker be punished by not producing enough? There’s got to be more to the story between ALDI and the supplier.
You were obviously lied to,the Bread is a regular store item,a lot of ALDI employees are new,and really don’t know what they’re talking about when it comes to many things ALDI. I proably know more than they do just being a regular shopper there for years.

Maybe it has more carbs then initially reported? Maybe the manufacturer has found another buyer for a higher price ?

I just got some a few days ago (in Illinois).
My wife tried to purchase some this morning at our local Aldi’s and was told it had been discontinued. She was told it was due to lack of supply because the bakery is too small of an operation to meet demands. We believe Aldi’s could have addressed this issue by limiting quantities per customer. Such a shame.
I agree while some ALDI’S had a limit,most didn’t,some people were allowed entire pallets of bread,sorry that’s ridiculous,but I’ve also saw restaurants buy pallets full of cheap milk,egg’s and bacon as well at ALDI,so this isn’t anything new for ALDI.
I agree, yet there must be more to the story. Tesla can’t keep up with demand of car sales, you don’ see them stop production do you?
Directv lost many local channels and kept reminding us subscribers that they are not coming to terms with the station owners. The bottom line is that someone didn’t pay enough for the product and this where it stagnates until it’s resolved. Finally they came to terms.
In addition, I have witnessed many times where shoppers acted like pigs and filled up their carts full of one product. The sales personnel must take them serious and insist that this is not right.

Same at both the Aldi’s that are near me. Just an fyi for those in the Chicago area…Now its dirty keto, but there’s a bread that when you subtract the fiber its 2 carbs per slice. Company is Tasty Temptations. Sold at Jewel, Buterra’s and some Caputo’s. It’s not bad if you toast it!
I bought 4 loaves in September, not realizing it would be discontinued but knew it was hard to find. I am on my last loaf. I have been to 3 Aldi’s (St. Paul, MN/Central WI) area, no luck. I asked the manager last night in one of the stores if it would return as an everyday item. She harshly responded “NO and don’t believe anything you read online or social media about Aldi’s. The bread is gone and won’t be back until late next year?” I said. “OK, sorry, you must have been questioned on this before.” She responded “Umm, yeah, like everyday. It gets old.” I said, “My apologies, I was certainly unaware. Thank you for your time.” She rolled her eyes and walked off. :-O I honestly was so taken back by the entire conversation that I left the rest of the items that I had in my cart, (quarter and all) right there.
I’d love to see the bread come back, but I certainly won’t ask about it. LOL
Yeah, also got 3 loaves in October here in Chicago, not realizing it wouldn’t be available again. Loved them and would like to get more. They could easily charge double for this bread and bring it back.
ALDI needs to be careful,if they do bring this bread back they better not jack the price up too much,it will back fire on them,the whole point of having it in teh stores is for a decent price,you can buy zero carb bread online but it’s expensive so most people won’t get it.
I’ve never found a yeasty zero carb bread online. This is pretty unique.
I just inquired to the Aldi site and received the canned response that it was a find item and will not be returning.
I went into the local Aldis here in So Cal and was told the bread would NOT be coming back and that it shows as Discontinued by the Manufacturer on their ordering system. Very sad news.

I just wonder whether the bread is like the elusive unicorn. It promises an awful lot in low carbs and if it was really as wonderful as the ingredients suggest, why would ALDI attempt to refuse a good continuous sale of a product regardless of a meager or great output.
So my question is– has an independent lab ever checked out its properties so ALDI won’t ever get in trouble for selling something which is not so great?

Because there are factions in high places that don’t want us to have this no carb, non obesity inducing bread. It infringes upon their “Cash Cow” of obese and diabetic “patients” ……….These same factions control the banks, the govt, the schools the media the medical and pharma industry, etc etc. So of course they are going to put up some road blocks and make it as difficult as possible to get something that doesn’t cause obesity and diabetes. Can’t have that, now can we???

Aldi needs to get their act together and keep this zero carb bread in stock. If not, greedy leeches and parasites are going to camp out in front of the store and buy it all up to resell on Amazon and Ebay for $14 per loaf just as they are doing RIGHT NOW!!! Get rid of some of the garbage bread filled with carbs and bromine and replace it with this no carb stuff. People are DESPERATE FOR NON TOXIC, NOB OBESITY CAUSING BREAD (AND FOOD!!!). It’s like playing Whack A Mole to navigate a grocery store these days in search of something edible and not filled with unpronounceable CRAP. I refuse to eat their poison any longer. I will just do without what they are calling “bread” nowadays if I have to. Real bread such as the kind they ate in the 50s and 60s and the kind they ate in the Bible was not obesity inducing because it was not full of garbage like BROMINE which is TERMITE POISON and loaded with unneccessary carbs. I have been told by the store manager that they won’t be selling this bread anymore because they can’t keep up with the demand of it. This was the last week of January. There seems to be some serious miscommunication going on here. I am not sure what to believe any more. But when i find the bread, i will buy several loaves and freeze them.
I’ve saw it every time I’ve been in ALDI in the last month,up until last night.I was told they haven’t got it any in a couple of weeks. ALDI just needs to stop being wishy washy,if you have a large demand for something you sell it,and have the manufactures make more,it’s not rocket science,you have the recipe,all the ingredients are available,so what’s the problem.The only thing I can think of is teh economy is so good,they can’t find enough workers to produce it.
The manager is full of it,he doesn’t set or make ALDI policy the Bread is back as a permanent item,maybe he’s hoarding it ad selling it on ebay,who knows. I’ve bee to ALDI 15 times in the last month,and a half,it’s been on the shelf about 50% of the time,the rest of the time it’s been sold out.
Our store in WI said it will be arriving in March.
Conyers, GA says they expect it in March.
First time I’ve seen it in this area, Rockford IL.
I live in Machesney,and I’ve been getting it for a month,but now it’s getting scarce again.I think because people were catching on that it’s out again,not many people knew about it coming back out.
I bounce between two stores regularly and have NEVER found it!
I have looked for this bread in the Richmond, VA area, more specifically Mechanicsville, VA. I have never seen it anywhere. Anyone know if it is sold anywhere in the area?
I was told it would be in our VA stores in March. Hmmm…this is March 20. When we were in FL in January it was plentiful. Wish I’d bought more!
There could be many reasons. Obviously the current situation in the US isn’t helping.
Found two loaves today at Aldi (left one for someone else to try). I just had a piece toasted with butter and liked it. Thank you, Aldi!!!
I ve been looking everywhere for this mysterious bread but can not locate it here in va beach , va area anywhere. Asked aldi employees… they don’t seem to know about it either. Was told by 1 employee each aldi gets different things and I would just have to go to every aldi to look for it! Wow aldi what s way to run a business!
My experience is that some ALDI’S have it all the time,others never have it,my local ALDI has it everytime I go in there,it’s never out,but 2 other ALDI’s in my area’s and up[ the road 15 miles never have it,or it’s just selling out fast,not sure what the deal is. I just try to keep several loaves in my freezer at all times.
My central Iowa Aldis have 1 or the other 0 carb bread at all times. Oct 2020 they had both, seeded and regular.
I wouldn’t eat it daily due to wheat & corn fiber but occasionally sure helps the bread need for Keto dieters.
What I’ve found lately is a big hollow tunnel running through the center of the loaves. Each slice is actually about half a slice.
Fiber doesn’t matter if it doesn’t spike blood sugar,and I’ve neve rseen that big whole in the bread LOL
I suspect it was the beginning or end of a run and it wasn’t realized.
