Trader Joe’s: Quiche Lorraine

Quiche is one of my favorite comfort foods, and I like it not only for its taste but also for its versatility. It works with a variety of interchangeable ingredients: cheese, ham, crab, broccoli, spinach, and more. Trader Joe’s offers its own take on the brunch classic.

The ingredients list is long but fairly straightforward, with items such as egg, milk, enriched wheat flour, uncured ham, heavy cream, Swiss cheese, butter, salt, red wine vinegar, and something called dough conditioner. The ham and butter do contain natural flavors.

Those with allergies should be aware it contains wheat, milk, and egg.

It can be heated in a conventional oven or in the microwave. The microwave is fastest, but it does require toggling between 50% and 100% power.

To prepare in an oven, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Remove outer package and plastic wrap and place the quiche tray on a baking sheet. Heat on the center rack for 25 to 30 minutes or until the center is warmed to 165 degrees. Remove from the oven and let stand two minutes before serving.

To prepare in a 1200 watt microwave, remove outer packaging and plastic wrap. Place the quiche tray in the microwave and heat 6 minutes at 50% power. Heat 2 to 3 minutes longer at 100% power or until center is warmed to 165 degrees. Remove from microwave and let stand two minutes before serving.

My husband and I ate the Trader Joe’s quiche for lunch, splitting it between the two of us, so it packed some more calories, fat, and sodium. While the box states it serves four, you would want to make sure you had some good sides to go along with this quiche if you are serving it to four people.

We enjoyed our quiche. The crust was flaky, though it took some work to cut through it with a fork, and the dish had just the right amount of small bits of diced ham. It may not have been as cheesy as the quiche I make at home, but it was still satisfying.

The Verdict:

Trader Joe’s Quiche Lorraine is what you would expect of store-bought quiche. It has a flaky crust and eggy, cheesy filling with pieces of diced ham. Just be careful because the servings are on the small side, and it’s easy to eat more of this than you should.
