Trader Joe’s: Trader Giotto’s Gnocchi al Gorgonzola

Last Updated on August 9, 2021

Aldi’s cousin, Trader Joe’s, has a good selection of Italian-inspired foods, ranging from fettucine alfredo to gnocchi.

Gnocchi are a type of pasta made of small, soft, doughy dumplings with ingredients such as wheat flour, potatoes, cornmeal, eggs, cheese, or other ingredients and served with a sauce.

While you can make gnocchi from scratch, it can be easily found in many grocery stores these days, sometimes plain and sometimes with sauce already added. Trader Joe’s offers convenience by selling frozen gnocchi and sauce in a bag ready to pour out and heat.

Trader Joe's Gnocchi al Gorgonzola

Trader Giotto’s Gnocchi al Gorgonzola is a product of Italy and cost $3.29 for a 16-oz. bag at the time of publication.

The bag states it contains about three one-cup servings. It’s not a lot of food per person, but it is fairly filling if you serve it with salad or other sides.

Ingredients are pretty straightforward: gnocchi, milk, cream, cheese, wheat flour, sunflower seed oil, salt, garlic, basil extract, black pepper, and nutmeg. The gnocchi itself is made with durum wheat semolina and dehydrated potatoes.

If you’re concerned about allergens, this contains wheat and milk.

One serving has 250 calories, 8 grams of total fat (12% DV), 5 grams of saturated fat (25% DV), 390 mg of sodium (16% DV), 36 grams of total carbohydrates (12% DV), 3 grams of dietary fiber (12% DV), 8 grams of sugars, and 6 grams of protein.

It has directions for heating on the stove top or in the microwave.

To prepare on the stove, heat one tablespoon of oil (I used Aldi’s Simply Nature 100% Pure Avocado Oil) in a skillet on medium heat. Add gnocchi and cheese. Gently stir for 7 minutes or until heated through.

To microwave, place in a microwave-safe dish and heat on high for 4 minutes. Gently stir and continue heating for 3 minutes longer. Stir and serve.

I heated this on the stove top, and my family members who enjoy pasta also liked this. The gnocchi was tender and puffy, with a thick and flavorful cheese sauce, and this is an item I would consider purchasing again from Trader Joe’s.

The Verdict:

Trader Joe’s Trader Giotto’s Gnocchi al Gorgonzola consists of doughy pasta/potato dumplings smothered in a rich cheese sauce. It heats from frozen in a matter of minutes for a convenient and tasty meal.
