Wahlburgers Beef Uncured Hot Dogs

Last winter, my family discovered the joys of Wahlburger hamburgers and Wahl Sauce. Wahlburgers was an A&E reality television show for several years starring Chef Paul Wahlberg, and the show was launched in 2014 in tandem with a burger chain restaurant of the same name. The burger chain was co-founded by Paul and his brothers Donnie (of New Kids on the Block fame) and Mark (also known by the stage name of Marky Mark).

The nearest Wahlburgers restaurant to my home is 100 miles away, but I can find Wahlburgers and Wahl Sauce in some of my local regular grocery chains, and within the past year Aldi also started selling the burgers and sauce as periodic limited-time specials. The burgers are money, and the special sauce is memorable and delicious.

Earlier this year, Wahlburger upped its game and is now selling bacon, uncured beef hot dogs, and dill pickle chips in grocery stores in partnership with Coleman Natural Foods. Even better, Aldi sold all three new products for a limited time in June of 2021. I promptly added them all to my shopping list. Here, I’m looking specifically at the hot dogs.

As mentioned above, these are Aldi Finds, which means they’re only in stores for a short time and you can’t order them from Aldi once they sell out. They’re not exclusive to Aldi, though, so if you can’t find them there, check your other local grocery stores.

These are made with beef that was raised in the U.S. with no antibiotics and no added hormones, a trademark of beef produced through Coleman Natural Foods. The hot dogs are fully cooked, gluten free, contain no preservatives (except as naturally occurring in celery powder and sea salt), and should be kept refrigerated below 40 degrees Fahrenheit at all times.

Ingredients are refreshingly simple: beef, water, and 2% or less of sea salt, cane sugar, natural spices (including ground mustard, white pepper, coriander, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger), honey, vinegar, cultured celery powder, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika.

One package contains eight hot dogs, or eight servings. One hot dog has 100 calories, 9 grams of total fat (12% DV), 3.5 grams of saturated fat (18% DV), 25 mg of cholesterol (8% DV), 260 mg of sodium (11% DV), 1 gram of total carbohydrates (0% DV), no dietary fiber or sugars (they do contain cane sugar, but not in a large enough amount to be listed in the nutrition information), and 4 grams of protein.

The package has heating instructions: heat for approximately 8-10 minutes on a stove top or grill, turning frequently to reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees.

We grilled our hot dogs and they turned out great. Because these are minimally processed, they are different from your typical hot dog. Most noticeably, they have a tougher outer casing. No one at our dinner table minded that. We served our hot dogs with both traditional add-ons (mustard, ketchup, relish, diced onions) and with some shredded cheddar and leftover chili for chili cheese dogs. If you want a quality hot dog, these are worth a try.

The Verdict:

Wahlburgers Beef Uncured Hot Dogs are part of a new at-home-dining lineup from the Wahlburger restaurant chain, and they’re produced in partnership with Coleman Natural Foods. These dogs are minimally processed, with beef and water as the primary ingredients, and they disappeared quickly after coming off our grill.
