We Asked an AI to Write a Post About Aldi. Here’s What It Said.

“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” — Dr. Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park

For better and for worse, the world has become increasingly automated. I’m not just talking about robots that help make cars. Thinking tasks that might once have been done by humans — calculations, observations, even conclusions — are increasingly being done by technology.

And that technology — and the programming that powers it — has grown more complex over time. Not long ago, the big thing on the Internet was the presence of “bots,” software scripts which would pretend to be human users by autoposting pre-scripted content on social media or buying up products on retail sites. Now, suddenly, we’re staring down at artificial intelligence (AI) programs that can do a frightening impersonation of human art and human writing. We’re seeing tech companies use AI to crank out content and students exploiting it to get their homework done. We’re just beginning to understand the implications of this technology. (Fans of science fiction will no doubt remind us where this could go.)

As Aldi writers, we’re also seeing the grocer move down the path of automation, if in somewhat different ways. The German grocer is in the midst of putting self-checkout in its stores even as it is starting to pilot checkout-free experiences. Aldi, already a fast and efficient grocer, is leveraging technology to level up in both categories. As with AI, we’re just beginning to understand where technology might take the supermarket.

In that spirit, I decided to put the question of one of the world’s most efficient grocers to the task of one of the world’s most fascinating emerging AI projects. I asked ChatGPT to write me a post about Aldi.

Below is what it said in response, exactly as the AI wrote it. Draw your own conclusions.

Me: Write me a post about Aldi.

ChatGPT: Aldi is a German discount grocery store chain that has been gaining popularity in the United States in recent years. Known for its low prices and high-quality products, Aldi is a great option for shoppers looking to save money on their groceries without compromising on taste or nutrition.

One of the things that sets Aldi apart from other grocery stores is its focus on private label products. Instead of carrying well-known national brands, Aldi sells its own exclusive brands that are typically of equal or higher quality at a lower price point. In addition, they carry a limited variety of products, Aldi’s lean stock model offer best value for money.

Another way Aldi keeps its prices low is by operating with a minimalistic approach, such as requiring customers to bring their own bags or pay for bags and having a quarter deposit for carts. This allows them to keep overhead costs low and pass the savings on to the consumer.

In recent years, Aldi has also been expanding its organic and gluten-free options, making it a great choice for shoppers with dietary restrictions. They also have a wide range of produce options at great prices.

Overall, Aldi is a great choice for anyone looking to save money on their grocery bill without sacrificing quality or selection. With its focus on private label products and minimalistic approach, Aldi is able to offer great deals on everything from fresh produce to pantry staples. And the stores are more and more common, which make it more convenient to shop at.

  1. Looks like the AI is just as good as any human at plagiarizing. 🤣🤣🤣

  2. A little too much repetition, but not a bad effort. I do look forward to seeing this post in a few years and thinking “remember chatgpt? The program that existed in other forms over 12 years ago? That was a thing for a minute or two.”

  3. Sounds like an Aldi press release!

  4. I thought it was well done. It pretty well covers the good parts of shopping at Aldi’s.

  5. AI appears to maintain better grammar and spelling than most of the typical readership.
Separately, light gray text against a white background may be “fashionable” and all, but know this: There are many people who require a higher contrast in order to read articles like this one without a struggle.
I doubt anything will be done to alleviate this issue, though. Please prove me wrong!

    • I’m not sure if you’re referring to the text in the screenshot from ChatGPT, which we can’t alter. We shared both the screenshot and a transcript of the text to hopefully make it easier to read.
